One of my favorite Trias watches (Swiss Made 17 jewel ETA 2824) has a problem. The rotor spins (quite a bit) with each turn on the crown to hand wind it. I'm not sure when this started, but it is really noticeable now. The rotor spins like a top when I hand wind the watch.

Is this a keyworks problem? Or, is it something else? Thanks!

Is it unwinding as you are winding?  Will the watch wind automaticaly?

Eric can help with the proper terminology here, but. . .

I'm fairly sure its the cannon pinion. It slides over the main shaft. If its too tight, the rotor will spin when you wind the watch. Too loose, the watch won't wind properly.

I think.

That is a good attempt Marc, lets go through it one step at a time

Cannon pinion is a tube with a pinion at its base frictioned to the center wheel post, the minute hand attaches to it.

I was asking indirectly about the Click spring.  This can not be that hard to nail down though.

Marc were you thinking of the clutch wheel or sliding pinion?

I am going to rip in to mine and see if I can give a easy pictorial solution.

If the cannon pinion is loose the minute hand will not move and you just tighten it with a cannon pinion tightener ( you can't make stuff this unoriginal up :D ).  It is a punch in a holder that you hit to tighten it.

Thanks for the replies. I am winding the watch. The watch runs fine as far as I know. It seems to wind automatically. Awhile ago I noticed the rotor moving when I would wind the watch. Now it is really spinning with each turn of the crown. It actually makes a whiring sound. :D

>>feels like one of the Hand Buzzers<<

You got that right. That is exactly what it feels like as I wind the watch. The rotor seems like it is matching RPM's with an F1 engine! :D

Oscar with your watch it is the click spring.

Mike the ratio of the stem and the rotor are different if they were the same then the rotor would have to weigh 5 lbs and be the size of a dinner plate to get some of the movements to wind.  That is why the rotor is spinning at such a fast speed as you wind.

Yes, that is what I was thinking. But, now that you say it, along with the cannon pinion tightener, I realize it had something to do with setting the watch (I think); not winding it.

I would rather go through the effort of designing a movement and have a watch maker come back with revisions than work with the internals of the ETA-VAL some times.  You have some very qualified Eng. here and a lot of people with watch exp. so we will get it figured out.

Just off the top of my head Marc the watch seems like it is only winding with the rotor and the stem is just spinning the rotor.  It is progressively gotten worse.  Moral to the story is Mike did not break it, I do not think, by taking the stem out and reseting it.  It is an ETA thing and that happens.
