:?:?Anyone know how the term "GRINGO" originated?

I was watching a 1930's western about Southern California and it came up.

I thought I had the answer, but was way off.

NO FAIR just using Google!:P

What I've always heard is that it is a bastardization of the first line in this old song:

"Green grow the lilacs." All the anglos sang it so they were called "green-grows," which eventually became Gringos.

You mean there are people who don't know this??????? What's the world coming to?

What do I win?

YOU GOT IT!

You win a barely worn Rolex Submariner from RandyG !!

It is a two tone model, so you can either wear your gold jewelry or not!

I think Oscar, Tony D andKenC contributed to the actual cost, but what the heck do I know?

Of course................if you beleive any of this then I do have some property just southeast of Key West, Florida that I want to unload!
