1865 - Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrenders  to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, ending the Civil War
 

1879 - W.C. Fields  was born:  "I cook with wine, sometimes I even add it to the food."  

1881 - Billy the Kid convicted of murder.
 
 
                       

1928 - Mae West made her glamorous debut on Broadway in the classic production of Diamond Lil.     "When caught between two evils, I generally pick the one I've never tried before."


                                
 

1945 - National Football League officials made it mandatory for football players to wear socks in all league games.  

1953 - Warner Brothers, the first of the major Hollywood studios to introduce 3-D motion pictures, chose this day to premiere The House of Wax at the Paramount Theatre in NYC.

1962 - President John F. Kennedy opened the Washington Senators’ baseball season by throwing out the first ball at the new D.C. Stadium.

1963 - The U.S. Senate passes a law making Winston Churchill the first honorary U.S. citizen.
