I think the only places you might see real ads like that would be England or Germany. It depends so much on the cultural background of the target audience - and whether or not your client has a sense of humour!

About 25 years ago I used to do some advertising for Transamerica Life Insurance, a fairly big client. Their advertising director actually had a sense of humour so for one presentation of print ads I had our Senior Art Director make up a dummy ad for me that looked as real as those BMW/Audi ads above and slipped it into the mix. I had them do a photo of a man lying on the floor, obviously having passed on from shock or fright and then I put a headline over the photo in large type that exclaimed: "Transamerica. Life insurance so good you wish you were dead already."

I can still see the tears of laughter running down the ad director's cheeks as he croaked, "Man, I wish we had the guts to run that!"
