Thought I would grab a Bob and see how it treated me. Struck a great deal with MAC and was able to get three straps on the cheap. Pretty good shipping time from Germany. I know Ian got one and wasn't overly pleased, but I think these are going to get a lot better with a little wear.

Strap One, a Bob Vertigo Calfskin in Brown

This strap gets a solid ***      OK

The floating keeper seems a bit off in color. this may improve over time as the strap gets some WABI going. A touch stiff but I can see it will break in easily.

Strap Two, a Bob Vertigo Calfskin in Black

This strap gets a solid *** +      OK +

And this strap too will take some breaking in but as I have worn it now for a couple of hours I can see it has a lot of potential to soften up nicely. I like the distressed look and feel. Both this strap and the brown Vertigo have a nice lining which looks as though it won't sweat stain too badly so these seem ideal for summer.

Strap Three, a Bob Marino Barillo in Brandy

This strap gets a solid *** +++      OK +++

Would be a four if not for a little flaw in the leather and the stiffness. This tapers down to 22mm at the buckle and has a bit less brutish look. Very pleased with the color on this strap. This is a bit stiff too but will improve over time. I wouldn't have guessed it but I think this is my favorite out of the three.

All ratings using a modified version of the ISSS which can be found here:

http://www.timetechtalk.com/view_topic.php?id=12252&forum_id=30

These are not high end straps but they are not complete mass produced junk. The relatively inexpensive cost of the straps with a solid look and feel makes these a fairly attractive proposition imho.

Thanks for taking a look!yourock.gif

I like the look of strap 3...the others suck (I know it's not your pics)...they look very rough and uncomfortable.  Don't know what price range they are in...oh, BTW, your rating system sucks, too.  You go from OK to Damn near perfect in  a single star....and whats all the ++++ stuff?  How many +++ make one whole *? mistake.gif   Inquiring minds want to know!!!  woohoo.gif

Hey buddy, its the IanM ISSS. :D My modifications (++) are basically a quarter point per +.;)

You are right the Vertigo straps are pretty rough but the lining is soft and smooth. I prefer a bit rougher look with the Kampschwimmer. If I ever get a Panny, who knows... I might even wear some exotic stuff...face4.gif

Number 3 is nice, Pax. I haven't bought any distressed straps yet so won't comment on something I know nothing about! Keep us up to date on how they break in. My concern with the Bob straps was this breaking-in business. Guess we are spoilt by the Red12s and the Savages (and others) of the world, cos they are pretty soft and comfy right out of the box.

Ken - you are a hard marker! ;)

Pax, number three just seems to highlight the Cal-dial better, IMHO. Those Marino Barillos look the biz. I am looking for something similar in a 24/24 up to 5mm thick (not 7mm thick like one I just bought mistake.gif - I got carried away with myself) with black stitching or no stitching at all. The 7mm came from the paneristi site and is beautifully made, but too thick for the intended purpose. It is ****, but now I need a new watch to make it work!!

Back to the drawing board...:?

Stay well y'all - IanM hand6.gif

Okay....."sucks" may have been a little harsh...at least as it pertains to the straps.  It was just my initial reaction the them as they simply looked (to me) to be extremely uncomfortable.  ...and PAX, let's take accountability for using (and then, of course, modifying) the grading system...it was your choice.  How about:

1) Very Nice

2) Nice

3) Okay

4) Doesn't suck as bad as #5

5) SUCKS!

I thought all 3 looked pretty good. I Lhearteyes.gifVE vintage and/or distressed leather. I could give a rats @ss about the rating system Pax used. The commentary was enough for me. They all look good Pax, but I'm leaning towards #1 for my favorite. Although, after looking at them again, #3 is just as sweet.
