I agree that up-convert is a great feature. That's a feature you should also look for in your amp/receiver, assuming you want that component to become "command central". I don't think you'll have to in general terms worry about backwards compatibility. I say general, because I have found as an owner that there is an issue with the high end dts remix audio discs that play flawlessly on dvd but not so much on blu-ray. Will do a separate post on that. Have had no issues with playing dvd's, and in fact they do look a bit better.
I would also insist on hdmi connection, and the ability to read deep color. Deep color isn't prevalent yet, but it stands a good chance of becoming. Am currently using the Panasonic DMP-BD30, and am overall very happy.
