I have had to do this 2 times and both with success and both the same scenario as you explain.

I found that if you use a really small flat screw driver or a small pair of tweezers and you get between the Lug and the Leather strap and you hold the longer portion of the 2 pieces you can screw out the stripped screw-nut while pulling outward on the longer pin, it sounds hard, but its way easy the hardest part is holding the head of the watch. I have had to do this 2 times and both with success and both the same scenario as you explain. cheers
