 If it's a COSC certified watch, then yeah, 17 sec/day would surely be a problem.  The fact it's not, and it's just using a glorified 2824, doesn't sound like a real problem.  Especially this early on it the life of the watch.  Usually, it takes awhile for the watch to really settle into how it's used by the owner.  Sometimes after months of use, the amount of time it gains per day comes down to 1/2 of what it starts out at.  So he might see it come down to only being around 8 sec/day fast.

Regardless, he needs to wear it as he normally will to see just how fast the watch runs.  Maybe even keep notes before he goes to get it regulated.  Then, he can provide that information to the watchmaker for when it is regulated, so that when it's on his wrist, it can be adjusted to keep nearly perfect time.

And there's nothing special to winding/using a 2824.  You can't overwind it, as once the mainspring is fully wound, it will slip so that it isn't wound any further.  So...no worries hand6.gif.
