The early Alphas (Chinese) were famous for this. I had to take two apart and clean the crystal from the inside. The problem did not repeat itself after the cleaning. This is a differant problem from a rainbow that develops from a defective AR coating which cannot be cleaned off but has to have the coating be re-applied, which I had on my Brietling SO.
