Once in a rare while, the mechanical watch should be turned back a little bit without the date being changed....maybe by 6 to 8 hours and then set forward again to the correct time. This is meant to slush around the lubricants that have always, always been slushed/pushed forward. My point is the lubricants also have to go back to ensure better lubrication.

I learned this from a trustworthy research-heavy WIS:)
