We are just now switching zenon to the 5 watt LED's that produce 100 lum. of light for 1 hour and 1.5 hrs. of useful declining light on 2 lithium batteries. The Zenon will produce 65 lum. of light for 1 hr.. LED only works on smaller lights. Larger lights are still zenon and will not change any time soon I think. The LED military grade bulbs are covered under ITAR so do not get any ideas of shipping them out of the country. The Hellfire is the mother of all zenon lights only sold to US military.
I did not know that........very interesting....I can tell you that when we switched on the Xenon lights on those tank guns...............nothing could hide from us!!!!
Come to think of it, I believe the Xenon searchlight was originally mounted on the M48 Patton Tank. (The precursor to the M60 MainBattle Tank....we also used the M48 in Vietnam as it gave us a way to use up the surplus and keep the M60's in Europe) Above the main gun was a 1 million candle-power Xenon searchlight. This light had both a white light and an infrared mode. It was boresighted with the main gun and gunsights so that it could be used to illuminate a target at night.
