 I shoot 1911s in .45 ACP all the time and have no issues. This subject has come up a few times on a couple of the firearm/military forums I'm a member of and nobody has had any trouble in relation to recoil from any caliber. If it's a vintage piece without shock protection, then I wouldn't wear it, but with more modern pieces you should be fine.
