Jeff, I experienced on a "Charcoal blue" Colt Walker 1847 that the blue was fading just by repetitive contact with the hand and showing the original grey patina of the steel: Specialy on the handle. This is a known process who happen on blued guns(who are unusual) so the blackened hold better that the Charcoal blue but is less charming. Still, the blue slightly fading in the grey steel is a beautifull patina. Those are old processes with heat and oiling if I remember. New coating with modern processes might hold longer. I should name that this Colt was a replica: An original is OUT of reasonnable prices...
