 I never experienced myself but I guess that's it's possible that in the shacking of the transport, the screw locking the stem in the case, get loose and then the stem would be free to go...
That would be the only natural explanation.
Anyway: He kind of knows that you will pay him back as you allready sent him the watch after his own payment.
So get the watch back, sent with tracking number and pay him after that...
