 I'd suggest a Seiko Sumo (SBDC001 or SBDC003) and pocket the leftover $400.  For the price I don't think you can do much better for a starter dive watch.  Superb styling, fit/finish, and movement. 



But given that you said you want something new, I'm anxiously awaiting the May(?) release of the Halios Laguna.  It's expected to be in the ~$700 range and looks like a stunner.
