 Marc were you thinking of the clutch wheel or sliding pinion? 

I am going to rip in to mine and see if I can give a easy pictorial solution.

If the cannon pinion is loose the minute hand will not move and you just tighten it with a cannon pinion tightener ( you can't make stuff this unoriginal up :D ).  It is a punch in a holder that you hit to tighten it.
