I use the "fancy" tool. A Bergeon. Cost $25, and worth every cent. Lonestarwatches.com sells them. Don't buy immitations. They break. I've got two of the POS's.

The small end of the Bergeon is especially good on bracelets. And, you can reverse the small end to a straight end for cases with lug holes. There also is a black plastic tool I have that works ok and costs about $10.

If you are dealing with an cheap OEM spring bar with no flange (spelling?) they are sometimes impossible to grab on to. As suggested above, just cut the sucker out and install a new (better) spring bar.
