I've been thinking about it myself. Crazy low price and the pics I've seen makes it look real good. Something else always seems to come along though. LOL :D

I have thought about these too. Crazy low price. didn't Nabco or someone have one. Supposed to be impressive for the price. The only thing stepping me is I don't want another watch with "SWISS MOVT" on the dial. I am hung up on that at the moment...

Hi Ken,

The Binnacle was my intro into auto divers.  I say go for it.  One of the best bangs-for-the-buck going, IMO.  The specs and build quality far surpasses the pricepoint.  It's still using an ETA 2824-2 mov't, correct?

Highlights.  The dial and broadsword hands are a great combo.  Legibility is good.  +11 seconds out of the box and it's still that way today.  Sapphire crystal.  The weight of the watch is significant for a 39mm piece and it wears well.  The bracelet is a HUGE plus for this watch.  Very solid with plenty of adjustments.  Screwed links instead of push pins is a nice detail.  It's a tough watch with little to no rattle and slop.

Cons:  The lume is average to a little below average, IMO.  Also, I don't like the cream colored dial, but that is a personal preference.  I wish the bracelet was uniform in it's finish.  The center links are polished.  If you wear it often enough, the paint on the bezel markings will start to wear.

I'm actually thinking about sending mine out to have some custom work done (case and bracelet refinishing and a lume job).

If I can find a pic, I'll try to post it for you.

--Steve

I have a Binnacle but it is the black face model.

Here is a pic of mine in case you havent seen it.

There is just sooooo much right about this watch.  I would just be adding to
what everyone else said positive about it.

Funny, when I first got it I wasnt too happy with it but it is now one of my favorite watches.  Got one of Freds Corsairs and SeaSharks aslo and lusting for a GlobeMaster but its a little too pricey for me right now.  A great buy.

just remember Bernhardt Instruments and Bernhardt Watch are no longer the same company......you could have bought the Avier on JTV with stretch pay in choice of 3 dial colors in a radiant (slightly different dial) as minehand6.gif

Yes...I know the partners had some sort of falling out and the "Instruments" company was dissolved and Fred started up the new company...I figured at the price on this watch (@ $199 + $10 S&H) I couldn't go wrong!

I have never "modded" a watch before...so if I don't like the dial (I love the case, bezel and bracelet) that this would be a good one to do it on.

$199. is a good price but remember the watch is just pushing 40mm so by today's dive watch standards it would be considered small and harder to sell imhowatch2.gif

True...but the # of watches I sell is negligible, and the 38mm to 42mm is my ideal size.  There are larger one I have that I love such as my ORSA watches, and some smaller ones that are nice like my original Airman and my ZENO Explorer.  It still amazes me that MY ENZO and STOWA, without the crowns are as small as they are.

...and, it's a good way for me to try out the company!

hehe.  The difference between the Enzo and Binnacle may be only 3mm as far as the diameter goes, but as far as weight and overall profile ....  It's night and day.

personally I would pick up one of the original Bernhardt Instruments as the dial work appeals to me more as well as the owner back then:D....on any given day you can find a half a dozen of these watches on the secondary sales forums ....why?

Didn't the old Binnacle have a different bezel? I think the old bezel which is the same as the one used on the Sea Shark bothered me...face4.gif

No, the Binnacle never had a different bezel.  You may be thinking of the Corsair
that has the same bezel as the Sea Shark but with the 12-3 on the bezel in silver
instead of being all black.

I prefer the all black bezel myself and may put one on my Corsair.

Okay, now that everyone has kicked my ass coyote2.gif for buying this watch, let me say:

1) While I may not read 100% of the posts, I damn well read close to it. cool10.gif

2) I posted this thread for info, and not getting much, I made a decision. cat28.gif

3) Thanks to all who participated AFTER the purchase...thankyou.gif

4) I looked for pre-owned on several of the forums and ebay...and did not find the one for less than $275 (I know...now there will be 100 of them) mistake.gif

5) My bad...I guess I'll have to start piling on all of the Invicta purchases...subtlelaugh.gif

I think you made a good buy there. Right now or after Basel it may be hard to get the movement for around that price. LOL ;)

And if you Mod it I can't wait to see what ya do. I would grab one and may later if there are any left but I'm going in to many directions right now. Like a dog chasing his tail I'm a Dawg chasing watches. LOL :D

Before the prices go through the roof. LOL :D

A half dozen on any given day? I don't think so. That just isn't the case unless you count Fred's posts (your buddy). And based on that, all SEIKO watches could be considered risky as there are dozens of them on sale every day.

In fact there are a lot of watches on sale every day. A lot of very high end brands and names. So, being on a sales forum trade corner doesn't mean a watch is crap. IF so, then all of my Steinharts are crap, etc., etc., etc., etc.

The good news is my boss said if we hit all our numbers this year he will pay for a week for my wife and I next year...more good new, should be a "slam dunk"  snoopy1.gif

I'm not talking Bernhardt Instruments but Bernhardt Watch versions(Seasharks etc) seem to pop up on quite a few sales forums including right here ....maybe it was a stretch of them at one time but they seem to turn over :?...and no one said nor implied any risk ...they are probably a nice daily wearer at $199. ....my preference would still be an original Bernhardt Instruments which are no longer made and still seem to hold some value although they sold for morehand6.gif... comparing a small company who makes small quantities like this to Seiko or any other large manufacturer is a stretch to me :D

Guys, relax.  I am happy with my purchase.  I was just being a little sarcastic and a little facetious.  I guess the humor didn't come off as intended...at any rate, this may or may not be my 1st mod project, but, in spite of the dial, I got the case, bracelet and movement I wanted!  I'm a happy camper!

There is an implied something in your asking "Why"!! Be it risk or whatever, not being liked, etc. Seasharks would certainly pop up more often as it is a watch many forum followers might try based on the price. Then move it to get something else. It happens every day with Miyota based watches under $200.

As for Seiko's size, maybe I should have said Stowa or whatever. There ALWAYS is something on sale on sales corners. And, if a lot of guys buy a Seashark, you can bet the bank some of them will be on the sales corner in a few months or less.
