Ok, so I am close to pulling the trigger on my first expensive (relative word I know, I would like to keep it under $5k) watch.  As this will be my most expensive watch purchase to date (I have a couple of cheaper Omegas and a Breitling) I plan on keeping this one indefinately.  In fact, I plan on passing it on to my son who was born this year on his 18th, 21st birthday or turns reasonably responsible...crap.gif

What do you feel will depreciate the least over time against inflation and will be the coolest hand me down in 20 years...I have always loved the Rolex 50th Sub..

Thanks in advance for the input.

For an heirloom watch there is nothing like a Rolex imho. The Kermit is a fine choice. Thumbsup3.gif

Used market has shown that Rolex Submariner has maintained
it's high resale value in almost every decade.

The 50th Anniversary Edition is of no exception,in fact this
watch will only increase in the future.

To receive any watch from a parent is a great feeling.
However,to receive a Rolex Submariner as a gift,that
is an unique experience that will be cherished
for many years.

Bought my wife a Rolex 18K Just Date Presidential with black dial/diamond chips and diamond bezel when my twin sons were born.  She also has a TT Cartier de Santos Automatic...but she wear a Jacque Lemans quartz and a little rectangular Stovard-Jurgebsen with a hand-wind ETA2660...go figure!

I just went through this same dilemma subtlelaugh.gif

See my post on Pepsi vs. Coke vs Pam.

I love both watches have had the Submariner twice and now a Panerai.  Just love the size and feel of the Panerai....and I loved my submariner....the feel was unreal on the wrist with the Rolex!!!!

I recommend you find a HIGH END dealer at a major city and try them all on....how about we all meet in Las Vegas and help him make a decision!!!  I'll buy the first round of free drinks!!

Oh and have a look for the TENO store in the Planet Hollywood shopping mall...they have XEMEX....well the last time I was there....

Oh man that is sweet...awesome...I will check out Teno.  I have never seen a  XEMEX in person.

Ok, so I acted fast.  I am in negotations with a watch I saw on the bay.  Can i talk prices and post links.

I am nervous buying a $5k watch on ebay but it is the easiest place to source a pre owned watch.  What can I do to protect myself besides using paypal, a credit card (i think they protect agaist fraud), and taking it immediately to a Rolex dealer to verify authenticity (will they even do this).

Yes you can post links referring to your deal.

I wouldn't buy one on the Bay. for an heirloom Rolex go through an AD. JMHO! You'll appreciate the service and have more recourse should anything go astray.:D

Not an AD but a jewlery store in Colorado...

Will a Rolex AD guarantee it's the real deal?

Not exactly sure I understand the question...most Rolex AD's do not have an on premise watchmaker.  They send the watch off to Rolex when it needs work...most Rolex AD's could not tell you if a "Rolex" is authentic they simply sell stuff.  Now, if you are asking if you buy it from an AD will he guarantee it is real...I cannot imagine that he wouldn't...although I do know of one MAJOR AD in FL that sold preowned Rolex as new!!!

My question is this...if I buy a watch from a jewler in CO and get it shipped to me can I take a watch to a local jewler (Rolex AD) and have them tell me that it is authenic...

Simple solution is if the seller can't show you it is the real deal don't buy. Why buy and then have it checked some place else?

You can take it in, but unless they have an experienced wacthmaker there, the answer is probably...no.  Those that work at AD's are mostly just sale's people, not watch experts.

My local AD does have a Rolex certified watchmake on the premises, but i wouldn't count on it. I really think the $ you might be saving are not worth the risk... and frankly, buying a Rolex should be an experience unlike eBay imho!.

What would your recourse be if you did have it authenticated and it came up fake? One thing was made very clear to me when I made my purchase... if you need anything... and they do mean anything... please come and see us.

Thanks for all the advice.  So the seller ended up being a jeweler in Colorado he has provided references.  The watch has all papers, boxes, etc.  Even all of the information on the person who first bought the watch.

Ok, so I have done about as much due dilligence as possible, can't think of what else I could possibly do regardless of who I am buying from.  I had the jewlery store email me an invoice with a 7 day return policy, checked the BBB which they have a A rating, they have been in business 9 years.

Watch has all the goodies, warranty card, manuals, etc...

What else could possibly be done?  Sorry I might be beating a dead horse here but are there fakes with serials and all documentation?

I don't think you're beating a dead horse, you're just not listening to those around you.  Which, is fine, of course, we all should make our own decisions.

I think you could take the watch to an AD, and they could contact Rolex to verify the serial number, etc.  They might not be able to visually verify it's real, but if the serial number comes back good, and matches the originating dealers address (which would be in the paperwork you get) then that's a good sign.

You could call and ask the Rolex dealer if they have a certified Watchmaker on the premesis that could open up the watch and verify it's authenticity (looking at the movement, etc).  You might need to pay them to take the time to do this.

Since you're getting it off the 'bay, how much versus MSRP are you saving?

Thank you for everyones input...what a great resource!!  yourock.gif

I did make the decision to go with the deal...so here are the details of the transaction for those that give a rip, it was actually a fun process...Rolex 16610LV D serial.

Watch is being sold by a jewelry store in CO.  Comes with inner/outer box, all papers, hang tags, etc...

Price was $4,850 shipped with a 7 day return policy.  The jewlery store sent me an invoice stating the details.

The seller told me the date of sale and AD on the warranty papers.  So the last thing I did (which finally made me comfortable) was played a little detective by calling 2 of the 4 stores in CO and asked if a watch was sold on X date in 2005.  The second gal I spoke to was kind enough to look up records and tell me that a watch was sold to John Doe for $4,875.  The same John Doe that the seller gave me.  I also know that a D serial LV was $4,875 in 2005.

Lastly, I have an appointment with a certified Rolex technican at an AD on Friday (the day after the watch arrives) to crack her open and confirm that everything is as it appears to be...

Oh yeah...and the seller has a rating of over 1,200 with a 99% on ebay...

Thanks again for the input!!
