Any feel for the quality of PVD coating on chinese built watches? I know not all PVD is created equal anybody have experiences to share? |

I hate to say this but they have the potential to do the best PVD coating if you are willing to pay for it, and also get with one of the better companies. They also have the potential to do no better than any others in the industry. It does so pain me to see dominance in the chemical industry move from Germany, to America, and now to China. |

I was concerned with the typical quality of PVD showing up in watch cases coming out of China on brands like Arbutus, Marina Militare and Trias for example. The movements have made tremendous strides. Being in the chemical industry for 25 years I know all to well what you are talking about though. Fire the Americans , stop hiring in Europe and lets through tons of money at China. Can't blame corporations though, vast untapped market with pretty decent level of education in the big cities and relatively inexpensive work force. When they get their act together India could be more formidable, better education system, better system of common laws and property protection. |

Should have one coming in next week or so. From a bay China seller and the pics show it as a nice looking matte finish not shiny paint ect. Whether it`s a true Pvd and blasted case or a copy finish of some sort, I will report back when it arrives on it`s finish ect. |

One of the things I look for is a temperature difference. A PVD coating should be warmer to the touch than the metal or even a thick paint finish. Next I look for a friction difference, should have less friction than you would expect even on an irregular surface. As far as cost and good finishes go I would not rely on price to much. I have has Phantoms that lost part of the finish and much cheaper watches that held theirs. |

almost every watch most WIS are wearing are Asian cased and finished regardless of origin so the ip plating they use (not pvd) seems to be excellent from my experiencehand6.gif and what E said about pvd is great info yourock.gif |

To go along with Oscar's post IP plating is like electroplating of finishes that are weaker than the metal they are deposited on. They can be buffed off if you choose to. PVD finishes are harder than the steal that they are deposited on given there chemical make up. They have come a long way over the past 5 years. |

The only experience I've had is with the Nauticfish/DeepBlue/Schaumburg style case and bracelet (the one with the ribs on the side of the case). It seems that the PVD (or whatever) on the case is quite durable, while the finish on the matching bracelet is noticable weaker. This is the same bracelet that Enzo and O7 use. I also saw this mentioned in an O7 post where a customer complained that the bracelet was wearing too quickly and Mitch admitted that the finish on the bracelet was weaker than the case. Just goes to show that your not guaranteed the same quality finish, even on the same watch. |
