Photobucket has been attacked by something and the site downloads a bunch of invasive cookies.  I got rid of it by going to IE Tools, Internet Options and deleting all cookies.

I just saw that, it isn't the first time either which is surprising to me.  Those phony 'antispyware' packages really make me angry, I have spent a lot of time removing them from friends' computers.

Tracking cookies aren't gonna kill your hard drive. I've been using PB today and didn't notice anything. Of course my machine is so riddled with tracking cookies due to my voracious porn consumption...toon1.gif

Was it truly a Trojan?

My wife actually went to PB this afternoon...didn't think to tell her there was a problem....it did hit her machine but I have her trained well enough not to install anything that has a .exe extension unless you asked for it, just closed the browser and everything was fine.

Ran System Mechanic anyway, found nothing wrong.

I didn't hit install or anything...I just clicked the tab off (it was, of course, and Anti-Spyware Program) and it somehow corrupted my audio and video drivers...could not uninstall and reinstall, so I had to reinstall the OS...it DID NOT kill the HD...

So I shouldn't be clocking on those links when it tells me I am infected, or that I am the 1000000 visitor and I won an iPod?

The problem with some of them is that even if you hit "cancel" the Trojan will get installed on your machine.  The only way to insure that nothing gets installed once you get the pop up is to open your "task manager" and close the browser.

Was that earlier in the week or just what you described today? I've been using it all day and no problems.

One of the techies that used to work for me turned me onto System Mechanic, he said it was the best product he has seen in a long time (he has a PHD in computer sciences)...not sure if anyone else here uses it and I have no clue how it works but i can tell you since starting to use it my machines (I have it installed on 4 laptops and my 2 desktops) have never run better and have had no problems with any kind of invasion...and it will run along side your normal anti-virus software too....
