Anybody notice watches worn in the movies that don't fit the time period the movie is supposed to take place in?

Anybody know how long the black/red bezel on the Rolex GMT has been around?  I was watching Apollo 13 over the weekend and one of the guys (I'll say captain) of a ship in the scene at the end when the capsule splashes down was wearing it.  The movie takes place in 1970.

Just wondered if anyone else likes to spot these things.

All the time Keith....my wife even asks me when we are watching a movie or TV, what kind of watch is that?  And yeah, you sometimes wonder as to who is doing the continuity on some of these movies...some of the watches just don't fit'

I too was watching Apollo 13 (for about the 10th time) this weekend, I'm pretty sure they were wearing Omegas...which would be correct, don't recall the scene you mentioned....will need to check the DVD.

Another interesting thing pertaining to this subject...has anyone noticed the product placement of watches in TV shoes...especially the CSI franchise...there are very specific close ups of watches being worn that clearly show the brand...two weeks ago Mac on CSI NY was wearing a Kobold.

Correct Nabco! Many close-ups on watches in CSI: Horatio from Miami made all first seasons with a Panerai... I am sure that if a famous actor would wear a very little known brand in a good movie, it would boost the sells as hell until it become a big selling brand.
Brad Pitt also clearely wear a Relax sub in the last Ocean's movie.

ok just to answer the question, Yes I look for those things but my knowledge isn't extensive enough to tell me if someone is right or wrong for the time periord..however just to add to this line of questioning I was looking for more info and history on the Citizen Bullhead when I came across a site talking about the Chrono's that NASA tested and used. I believe it was the all knowing Chuck Maddox that responded thoroughly but what I didn't know is that there is evidence to suggest as well as verbal testimony from Swigart that he did wear a GMT on Apollo 13 mission.  There was a picture posted of Swigart after splashdown wearing 2 watches.  So it seems the movie did get it right. They did have their Omegas but Swigart also had his Rolex.   Another interesting tidbit that I didn't know was that a Waltham chrono also made it to the surface of the moon.

(man I gotta find that link)

Nick... There have actually been 3 Kobolds on CSI NY; Sheldon Hawks wore a Rattrapante Stirling Moss, Danny Mesner wore a Large Soarway Diver and I believe Mac's is a Spirit Of America.

I've always thought that it looks like the cast of "The Wire" are rocking nice watches.

Yea I'm always trying to get a look at watches worn if a decent view of them is shown. And rather often watches are indeed out of place.

NCIS and NUMBERS are also good for well placed watches, Omegas mostly for NCIS but I notice this season there are either some new models or different brands on NCIS...

I noticed on NCIS that both Gibbs and Tony wear Omega P.O.

the Coke bezel Rolex GMT was worn by and known as the  "Pussy Galore Rolex" in the Bond film Goldfinger 1964...not sure that was the 1st year though but many watches made their debuts in Bond flicks hand6.gif
