Hi - I'm looking for a gift watch for my buddy's 40th bd. He's a big boned guy and I bought a Monster thinking it was a good fit - my wife thinks its way too small. What idea's do you have if I have a $400 budget? I'd like a divers or pilot watch - 45mm 'ish. Thanks - Steve |

It's a small face for its size. It looks much smaller that my Lum-Tec B3 (43). What about Debaufre Ocean watches? Other idea's? |

Hi Steve...well it sort of depends how important having an automatic movement is to you versus considering watches with quartz movements (if your friend is an avid WIS, he may really like an automatic or hand wound watch...joe public out there would probably not know or care about the difference so if it is a "gift" that may allow you to consider some watches you may not consider for yourself). So not knowing if you must have automatic, I'll throw some out there (by the way, I have a Black and Orange Monster, they are fantastic, well built watches for the money, but I agree with your wife...they don't wear large especially compared to the trend toward bigger pieces today. So if you are looking for a beefy piece with some good wrist presence for a bigger guy (with a ~$400 budget): These micro-brands give you huge bang for the buck ~$400!! 1) Benarus Worldiver GMT Quartz: very sweet piece and the build quality from Benarus will consistently blow you away!!! http://www.benarus.com/gmtquartz/index.php 2) Bali Ha'i (the Ha'i-Q) also a quartz http://www.balihaiproject.com/watches/q.htm 3) Orsa Sea Angler (Oh man...I just checked the site and it now says that it is sold out...this watch with an ETA 2824 automatic for $350-$375 is a steal of a deal) Berg had some of these available since about October so it might be worth emailing him through the site. http://www.orsawatchco.com/Sea-Angler.html 4) Boschett Cave Dweller (you will be close to $400 with the Miyota automatic movement instead of the ETA-2824 model). http://www.boschett-timepieces.com/collection/cavedweller.php 5) For a nice looking piece with some very beefy options for lots of wrist presence you might want to look at some models from...Invicta...you will see some really like these while others not so much. 6) Seiko will always provide a fantastic built watch for the money...I don't even know where to start here, but there are many options in the Seiko line and Seiko is making some bigger pieces out there these days. Hello my WIS friends, Redsub: the monsters are 42mm diameter, not 45mm.. As long as we're throwing suggestions might I add the Ocean7 G-2 Chrono, it certainly walks along with this babies, it's got a 42mm diameter BUT a 17mm heightness which makes it very robust but always maintaining it's appeal. http://www.ocean7watchco.com/cs1/index.php?target=products&product_id=6 |

If it's a pilot for $400 and you want a lot of dial why not check out a used DeBaufre Nav-B with the 6497? Big dial with great lume. |

I have both the Bali Ha'i Q, and the Cave Dweller. My wrist is about 7.75". Both watches are fabulous but if you are going for wrist presence on a large wrist, the Cave Dweller is hard to beat. Cave Dweller is a massive hunk of metal that feels soooo good on the wrist. |

For a truly big watch check out a citizen eco-zilla...48 by 18... While it does have a smaller dial, compared to its bezel...it has no lack of wrist presence. |

Thanks to everyone for your input. I ended up deciding on a Cave Dweller. I can't wait to see it - but am sure I'll then want one for myself too... I appreciate the inputs.  |
