Egged on by Paxman, I pose the following question. Father's day cometh, and I get a gift. For 300 USA dollars or less, what is the proper watch for a philosopher? Also, is there a website somewhere that has serial numbers for a c. 1910 Elgin pocket watch in a Philadelphia Watch Case Company case? The case is number 8346875. TIA! Man, this forum has the best emoticons.  Edit: I've learned that case numbers are not useful, and that the serial number of the Elgin watch, which is apparently properly described as a sidewinder, is 13,539,715, and dates to 1906. The watch belonged to my great grandfather, a criminal defense lawyer in Lorain Ohio, a rough, industrial, ship building town at the time. Well done Nick. Now we gotta hook him up on a watch suitable for a philosopher on $300. Does a philosopher require a watch? I would almost thing it would have to be a dress watch or may be a pilot style but this is just my perception really of what a philosopher would or should wear. I'm certain my perception is skewed and faulty. I wonder what the rest of the 3T crew would think. Tom, if you wanna pick something up on the secondary market you can do all right in your budget. Do you have anyconcern over water resistance? Are you and active philosopher? Like a strap or metal bracelet? |

ooooooo, so $300 for a watch, let me think. You can get some sweet new Vostok Divers watches for less than that. The new ones not the old ones PM me if you want sites. Hmm or if you chip in $50 more you can get a Artego that is a big divers watch or maybe a classic looking pilot watch by Volmax with Poljot movement, they are hand crankers but very good IMHO. Craig at R2A has some great watches around that price. I know these are all Russian but at that price you will have a good selection to choose from, I have loads of Russians and they are very good. Also maybe look into an Orient or a Seiko automatic, they have divers and Orient have a more smart looking power reserve range. Or as a philosopher you could spend the money to visit a friend and contemplate what time it is. Hope it helps. Neo |

"Philosopher's stone" Over here in the states they thought we wouldn't understand the reference, so a famous kid's book became "HP and the Sorcerer's Stone." I was insulted. Some of those Russian Watches are really cool. I especially like the look of the watches based on WWII period stuff. I wouldn't call it obnoxious Tom, and not a bad price.....probably not something you wold want to wear everyday though  and probably not the best choice for your first steps into WISdomIf you like the Russian watches check out http://www.russia2all.com, Craig Hester the owner is a friend of 3T and you can get a 10% discount, he is probably the largest importer of Russian watches in the US....the Vostok Europe watches are a pretty good value. |

Also I would not be too quick to buy a Russian with a Swiss movement as they have thier own movements to offer at lower prices and they are good. If you are going to go off to the realms of an ETA movement maybe another make would be better, maybe like the Magellan or something from one of the sponsors.
