Thief befriended man, punched him and ran off with £6,000 Rolex

POLICE are hunting a thief who befriended a reveller — then punched him and ran off with his £6,000 Rolex.

The London-based owner of the expensive watch was in a Plymouth nightclub when he started chatting to a man he had never met before.

Police say the pair were having a friendly conversation when the stranger asked to have a closer look at the 25-year-old's Rolex Yacht-Master.

He then punched him in the face without warning and fled the Firefly bar, in North Hill, clutching the platinum watch before pals could act.

A force spokesman said: "The gentleman was talking to the offender when he asked to have a look at the watch.

"He said he wanted to try it on, then he's whacked him one and ran off.

"Because the victim received a blow to the face he was dazed for a few seconds and the offender managed to get away.

"He had no injuries but is clearly very upset about this theft."

Police are now hoping to hear from fellow club-goers who may have spotted the culprit around the time of the theft, which happened sometime between 2am and 4am on Thursday, July 22.

Officers are also urging city people — especially jewellers — to be on the lookout for the luxury Rolex, which they suspect the offender may try to sell on.

The thief is described as being aged between 23 and 30 years old, around six feet tall and of medium build.

He is of pale complexion and has light brown hair that is around one inch long and "unkempt".

He also had "gaping teeth" and what police have described as "immature facial hair" on his chin and above his upper lip.

While in Firefly he was wearing a Stone Island fleece and dark tracksuit-style casual trousers.

Agreed, I wear something I do not mind losing. I would not put 6k in my wallet and go out to get drunk at a night club thats just asking for it.

People suck.

I dont know what part of town this place is in ,but if it's not the ghetto, then has every right to wear what he want's , where he wants. This is a prime example of our society making excuses for the criminals. He's not asking for it just because he's wearing a Rolex,

Fair play, yes he should be able to wear what he wants when he wants but North Hill at 4am after an all nighter is risky. It is mainly a student area but is known to have a few bad apples around and that is the locals. I used to live in North Hill Plymouth, I live about a mile away now but it is not a good idea to mix a heavy night with a Rolex.
Trust me anyone in a club at 4am has been on an all nighter it is that type of area, filled with all night bars etc aimed at students.
I mean a total stranger at 4am in a night club asking to have a go on your rolex? He must have been off his face to even take it off his wrist. I hope he had it insured.

Well if he took it off his wrist to let a total stranger @ 4am in a bad part of town to get a closer look ,then I WILL AGREE HE'S AN IDIOT.. I guess I didnt understand that part, the way I understood it was he got punched & the thief took it. Either way people suck...

I hope he had a receipt as this could be a total con for a 6k insurance deal or he is just plain stupid and has too much money.

Moral of the story:

Never show anyone what type of watch
you're wearing regardless if they are your friends,
or a complete stranger.

Cheers,
Simon

When a stranger ask "Let me try your jacket, watch, necklace, whatever of your possessions, you'd be an idiot to accept. That's the oldest trick to steal naive people. The watch owner is a big fool who needed a "lesson from the street" . Those watches are often sold/exchanged quickely to some criminals who have on the last point of them worryness to wear a stolen numeroted watch.
Most likely, the owner can just forget it and move over with a learned lesson he should have allready experienced when he was a teen.
