What does a decorated movt's mean to you and how much would you pay for it? Lemania made ugly crono's that worked well! Etta/Val is stepping up prod. of new decorated OEM movt's. Sieko's motto has been make it work (been looking at everyones Seiko's they are cool). How much does it change the value of the watch to you, if any, and why? If, and only if, a movement is HAND decorated.............then it is of value to me as it is individual and is a value of craftmanship. If it is done by machine......................it might as well be undecotated as it has no significance! |

Ken, that is funny that you say that. I was thinking about Hand Guilloche work on the Jean Marcell that Oscar has. I think it is so funny that people talk about the perfect decoration on something. Personaly I never found any done by hand to be perfect under a loop, or I never could afford any "perfect hand work". Stamping work made in 2 sec never did it for me, I do not care how perfect it is. If you are talking about machine scrollwork vs hand scrollwork I agree that there is no extra value in machine scrollwork but if your talking about nice finishwork as decoration like perlage or some other machine made tooling patern its only important to me if its a display back watch. What I really don't like is turning over a display back watch only to find an ugly unfinished movement in it ... oooh ya thats one hot miyota :? And whats the point of paying for the extra machine time if its not a display back? I agree..............I'm not a big fan of display backs just for the sake of being able to see a movement, unless there is some great craftsmanship involved.....................I stopped wear my watches "upside-down" years ago.:D Last edited on Sat Apr 15th, 2006 09:10 pm by |

I agree...exhibition backs are way overdone these days...I love my tauchmeister divers because they have this big convex bubble like stainless steel back that gives the impression of robustness....I am of the school that if it can go wrong, it will go wrong... I also believe in watches as tools as well as watches as works of art...works of art are done by hand by individuals. I very much appreciate the beauty of a hand decorated and/or skeletonized movement....I'm not sure I'd wish to pay a premium to own one.
