So I sold a Sea Gull manual wind on another forum, transaction was smooth. Then today I get this "Hi Mario, I have just received the watch, I was pleased at first, but when I pulled the crown to set time, the crown falls out! This should not have happened if the watch is in good condition, I have had over 20 watches in my collection and this is the first time such a thing has happened! I will have to send this watch to a watchmaker to fix the problem with the crown, it will cost me in excess of $50. I think its only fair that you refund me at least $50 for the repair. I am very disappointed with this purchase.." When I sent the watch it was in perfect working order, and at about 95% condition. Also looking at the tracking information, the watch is still in transit...so just that alone seems fishy. I mentioned this to the guy in my reply and also asked to see a picture of what he is talking about. So I'll see what he replies with. Anyway has anyone experienced something like this before? |

I've pulled a stem out of a watch before on a pre-owned but did not bother the previous owner. And it only cost me $15 to have my watch guy put it back in. |

Take out and put back in the wind stem, is an easy procedure wich a lot of watch lovers is able to do. Ask money before any problem check by qualified watchmaker is not correct. |

Smells bad to me. The crown should be screwed on the stem(then locked on it with loctite most likely) so the crown could be simply screwed again on the stem with some loctite to lock it back definitly. Or he means that the stem loosen from the movement and the crown came out with the stem attached to it?? Wierd: He only speak about the crown. Ask pictures: Because the watch shouldn't be stated as in transit! |

Crowns and stems can come out. I have had it happen also after receiving a second hand watch. With the help of 3T, I got it back in myself. You can simply offer to refund the money upon receipt of the watch. $50 seems high to re-insert a stem/crown unless it is broken off somehow. Then every market is different. And, it is a Chinese made movement which might make some reluctant to mess with it. But, if you offer to refund the person's money after you get the watch back, that should help diffuse the person's fears. If he/she says no, I want $50! Then I would be suspicious. |

Thanks everyone for the advice on the crown and crown stem problem. I sent the guy a message asking for pictures of the crown and watch, as well as a scanned copy of the receipt from the watchmaker. Also asked him to describe the packaging of the watch in detail, so that I'd know he actually had it. This was all yesterday afternoon around 2:00pm or so, since then no reply from the guy. He is in Singapore, I am in Seoul, one hour difference I believe. If there is no reply by I'd say today or tomorrow, then I am assuming this is how this guy tries to make a quick 50 bucks. |

Right, so here is round 2...I get this picture from him![]() Is it just me or does it look like he unscrewed the case back and removed the crown? and here's what he says: "By the way, I realize that I cannot even set the time on this watch as the crown is not able to engage and hence totally not usable! As it will costs me $100 to fix this watch in Singapore,"... He wants a refund, which is fine, but after I refund the money what's to keep this guy from just keeping the watch and not sending it back...No trust with this guy. So I am thinking to tell him that I will buy it back from him for the amount he paid me, so that way if he doesn't send the watch I can file a case with paypal...What do you guys think? And thanks again for all the replies and advice... |

I never experienced myself but I guess that's it's possible that in the shacking of the transport, the screw locking the stem in the case, get loose and then the stem would be free to go... That would be the only natural explanation. Anyway: He kind of knows that you will pay him back as you allready sent him the watch after his own payment. So get the watch back, sent with tracking number and pay him after that... |

I would only refund money upon actual receipt of the watch back in my hands. I sold a watch to a guy on ebay. I was trusting (a mistake in this case). He claimed it arrived with scratches on the crystal. Since it was only $75, I Paypaled the money back and told him to ship it. He kept the watch and told me to bite the big one. That said, it should not be a big deal to put the crown and stem back in on that watch. It is a 17-jewel hand wind model and it should be relatively simple to secure it back in. |

protocol in a situation like this is always the same for any honest WIS....e-mail him that a full refund will be made once you receive the watch back..it's not worth getting all stressed over especially since the watch involved could have easily had the crown/stem pulled out...he may have been a bit more forceful on pulling it out in order for it to release but it's a Seagull and could have easily happened...chalk it up as a WIS lesson learned my friend... |

Either that or tell him it's about a $20 fix by a professional watchmaker in the US (and it should be cheaper in Singapore) and that you will refund him that amount out of courtesy or you will refund his money after you receive the watch via registered mail...postage is on him! |

Thanks again everyone... I emailed him exactly what everyone here is saying, but this guy is insisting on refund before mailing the watch back to me, which is completely ridiculous...I will tell him again to send the watch back first, and after I get it I will refund his funds. Also looking at paypals claims procedures, they also suggest the same method; mail back, then refund...Very valuable lesson learned here. And you gotta love that Ozzy... Cheers, Mario... |

mario wrote: Thanks again everyone... Mario...great advice by all the excellent WIS's here at 3T!!! Very sorry that you are experiencing an obvious "sour" and "not-on-the-up-and-up" deal...(with your offer, it appears you are definitely being taken for a ride on this deal). It is very unfortunate...you are doing the right thing here, and I really hope this deal ends up being "right and with integrity" in the end. This guy is a definite scammer to be insisting that you refund him PRIOR to returning the watch...BOOOO!...hammer.gif...yes, you might as well hit yourself with a hammer...(why can't all watch deals be smooth ones)???? I have been lucky to have only had ONE bad deal in all of my dealings...bought a piece through the "bay" which was completely misrepresented and in this case, the "bay" fully stood behind their guarantee...I returned the watch despite no communication from the seller, and the "bay" fully refunded my purchase including shipping. Yes, sometimes the good guys win, and I hope that this works out "right" for you Mario. Last edited on Fri Jan 21st, 2011 10:52 pm by stew77 |

The guy was willing to take a detailed photo, and he did pay for it in the first place, so I'd give him the benefit of the doubt that it arrived that way, and offer to refund his money after you receive the watch. On another note, that's a nice-looking watch! I've grown to like orange lume on black dials quite a bit lately. |

Sux for both of you, no doubt. Look at it the opposite way. He sent you money before he had the watch (standard procedure), you send the watch, he gets it and discovers the crown pulls out complete with stem. Could he be on another forum in Singapore stating "I got taken for a ride by a guy on another forum. Look at this POS Sea-Gull he claims works fine, and here the crown/stem popped right out". If he's doubtful, offer to refund partial payment, enough to cover his return shipping. When you get it, send the balance of payment. Marc btw - as mentioned previously, SG is one of the least expensive places to have work performed on a watch. Last edited on Sat Jan 22nd, 2011 03:52 pm by IW |

Just out of curiosity, are you sure that is your Sea-Gull that is in the picture? |

My 2 cents....OK 5 cents because of the recession happy1.gif I agree with every one else....accepted protocol on the FS forums in cases like this is if you agree to refund his money (and you probably should) requiring you receive the watch back first is the accepted way of doing business. |

So the guy continued to refuse the refund as was talked about here, continuing to request refund first then sending the watch back. I explained to him many times that I would have no protection this way...finally told him to read paypal protocol on these matters. After this he says he doesn't want a refund any more and asks for a repair fee of $50, claiming that repairs of any kind a extremely expensive in Singapore...in the end we were able to negotiate an adequate amount to be refunded...however I still feel like a schmuck. After he gave up on the full refund, before shipping the watch back to me, I let him know what I thought he was doing, he didn't reply to this at all...if he is doing what I think he is, I really wonder how many people have been victims of these kinds of people. I feel as though I should put a warning about this guy, but am not 100% sure so I am at a loss...if anyone wants this guy's user name PM me. And yes, that was the watch I sent him...i can tell by the brushed bezel area, originally these are polished. I ended up brushing it for a different look. Again many thanks for all the advice...it's great to have such an honest forum to visit... |

I really pity those loosers who are making 50 buks scams or want to swindle someone for 150 buks. Poor suckers, they are so ridiculous: How can 50 buks can make a life better or different? Remember me those asses who rob a grocery shop at gun-point for 200 buks, a pack of smokes and a bag of chips... laughing.gif |
