It took my wife and I about 22 hours of flying to get here (St. Petersburg). Pretty brutal for a guy like me who doesn't like to fly. Three stops in total. Washington DC, Germany and Russia. It is really hot here. The air conditioning (such as it is here) barely cools the room 5 degrees. I'm used to heat, but heat + humidity = very uncomfortable. Temps are about 30 degrees Celsius. Speaking of shopping, we walked a huge (I mean huge) block long building full of nothing but watch shops. I was surprised to see mostly Swiss brands, and names such as Orient, Seiko and Citizen. They have just gobs of high end and middle end Swiss brands. I have only found a small case or two of Russian watches that I am familiar with. Out of this block long line up of stores it amounts to less than 5% of the watches on display. I'm not sure yet, but it would seem that the prices on the Russian watches are quite reasonable. We got confused on the coversion rate stuff, but we think we have it now so we can check prices. The city is pretty old. And, there is security everywhere. Someone is watching you constantly while you are shopping. There are security guards posted about every 100 feet. And that is just the visible ones. Not many people smile either. :) |

St. Pteresburg is really great place. Was there a few years ago, you have to go to the Hermitage! If you want to see a shoppers paradise go to Moscow, but beware it is the most expensive city in Europe! There are high end jewelers everywhere, not to mention Maserati, Jaguar, and Mercedes dealers! Thanks everyone. Thanks Andy for the tips. Now that we have figured out the conversion rate, the prices are very high. An Aviator Alarm watch that sells for about $180 or so in the U.S. (maybe a tad more with the latest price increase) is selling for 16,180 P in the only shop I could find one. That is $647.20!!! I don't get it. I checked on a Buran watch I know the price of and it was about $315 for a $180 watch. So, don't expect me to come home with many watches. Swiss watches are just as crazy. I'm sure there might be some better prices in other parts of the city, but I'm not going there by myself. The only cool thing is I did get to see tons of watches I would not see in the U.S. There a lots of Orient models here that I have never seen. Tons of quartz stuff. And, I did see that new Orient model that Marc just got. Wow is that ever a nice dive style watch. The pictures do not do that one justice. I still can't get over how hot is here. Oh, if you like short skirts and high heels, dis is da place. Lots and lots of ladies walking around... |

Another interesting thing, I haven't really seen many women in shorts. I have yet to see any male in shorts. I mean it is really hot and every man wears pants. Women and young girls wear short skirts (really short in some cases) with nylons and high heels. Lots of middrif showing too. No shorts. Or very few. (In AZ, nylons are just about non existent in the summer.) Just some casual observations mind you of the street traffic. :D:D:D |

Of course a proper man never shows his legs... He should also have a jacket, tie and hat... That it why I am in shorts and t-shirt (unshaven slob)! Intersting observations, Mike. Short skirts and nylons... they're gonna cook that stuff... |
