So this article raises a couple questions for newbies like myself

1.  I have more than one automatic, but don't keep them wound.  Is this a problem?  I refuse to get a watch winder.  Am I risking damage to the movement by letting them stop running for weeks at a time?

2.  What needs to be periodically serviced on an automatic, and where would I go to get it done properly?

Thanks for the insight

I too would be interested in opinions on this subject.  Different watchmakers have given me totally opposite answers to this question, some say keep them wound and others say it does not matter, the only benefit to keeping them wound keeps the watch winder manufactures in business.

My logic is this.....a watch movement is a small precise machine with many moving parts, the more those parts move the more they wear out, if a watch is left not running the parts do not wear out.....

I would appreciate the sharing of the vast amount of wisdom on this board concerning this question.

Thanks

First off if the watch wears out before you it was not really that well made. A good automatic should be good for a few generations at least if well maintained.

Some folks do like to have the watches on winders just so they don't have to reset the watch every time.

But all you really need to do is wind the watch several times a year so it can keep it's self lubed. They have a oil in them that if it sits to long you will have to get it serviced for it will as a uncle of mine say... " get gunnked up?

I have most of the ones I wear often on winders but others I just take out of the box about one a month and shake them so they wind a little and let them get a little work out.

I have heard many sides to it all too but to me just a little logic and common since and TLC for the watches should do just fine. ;)
