There is no doubt it is a classic and all, and definitely in the category of "grail" watch for some.  However, given that the Kenzo is almost the same for half the price, it makes the Dreadnought a tough sell, esp with that tiny dotted lume index ring for the dial (wish the lume dots were on the outside edge of the dial instead of the inside).

Whoever gets this dreadnaught is a lucky person!

I hate to flaunt my ignorance but why and how did the dreadnought attain such icon-like status?

Yea I saw that. For the price point to many others I'd rather have. ;)

I think it was because originally it sold for a reasonable price, around $700 (only 200 were made) and there were not too many choices for similar large divers using the same/similar case over the following years.  Today, the watches available that use the Fricker made case similar (or identical to) the Dreadnought are the Kenzo Nautilus, Alphatime Sawfish, Jacques Etoile Atlantis, and Muhle Rasmus, so its more of a pick and choose which dial/bezel you prefer now rather than being limited to just the Dreadnaught.

'Fraid I'd already worn the Sawfish when I finally caught a good deal on a Dreadnought.  That knocked a good bit of the "shine" off the Dread.  Very cool watch, have to agree I'd have located the indeces a little differently, but no complaints at all (one of the coolest casebacks in the biz!).  It was absolutely groundbreaking in terms of value at it's original pricepoint.

But it's limited nature and popularity drove prices up rapidly, and I'd have trouble justifying current selling prices on LE appeal.  Particularly with all the aforementioned competing Fricker cased divers selling new for so much less.

'Course that's JM2CW!

As much as I love the Dreadnought, I would go with the Alpha Time given the prices.

Still, what a great watch, and to have had it for the original price...

Cheers,
Griff
