This is my new arrival which was shipped from Japan by the man himself.  Meet my new SEIKO PROSPEX MARINE MASTER 1000m SBDX 011. Flagship of the entire Seiko automatic divers' line, this little monster is rated for 1000m water resist.

This is the packaging after Customs inspection.

These are the components of the entire package. The watch came with surprises for free: a Bergeon strap changing tool and a Zulu in black.

This was how it looked like all alone and my heart rate rising.

This is a portrait shot of the Marine Master

The caseback in DLC

The PVD'd or DLC'd buckle (hard to tell).

This is the ceramic shroud that protects the PVD'd titanium bezel and monocoqued titanium case. The shroud is further coated with a blackened steel/PVD type material thus all these provide the watch with lots of protection. This cocktail of materials gives the watch a fortress of strength. Between the movement's top plate and the "floor" of the watch case is a thin sheet of lead --- for anti-magnetic properties. Size of each of the 4 hexscrew heads is 5mm. The screws are blackened with a PVD type of coating

Here's another shot of the watch's profile with the shroud.

This is a better shot of the watch showing it as almost totally black. The dial is flat black and everything else is black except for the dial markings and indeces. Date disc is white with black numerals. There is no HEV needed because the watch simply doesn't need one. With the use of a proprietary L-shaped gasket, Seiko has totally eradicated the need for the HEV.

Here are a few wrist shots. I discovered that my small wrist at 6.75 inches does not take a liking to the watch's strap, and vice versa. Although the watch presents itself very well by rising from the wrist via lugs that are UNDER  --- and not outside the case's edge, somehow the rubber strap with its wet suit fold extensions foils an otherwise excellent wrist presentation. The watch just doesn't stay put. I guess if I had bigger wrists of at least 7.25 inches, this would a perfect fit. Check out the below wrists shots and see what I mean.

Check out how thick and tall the watch is....if only it would stay on my wrist bettersubtlelaugh.gif. But I can't complain, the profile on the wrist is just top-rate. Note where the lugs are located on th below shot. They are right under the case itself thus "elevating" the watch on the wrist.

Let's move on to size comparisons just so you'll get a rough idea of how substantial a watch this is. I put some text on the pix.

This is my Rolex DSSD beside the MM

My Panerai Daylight on the right.

Now see the MM on the right bully the 2 others. Check out the  thickness of the case.

The mandatory lume shot taken inside the hotel's cabinet. Note this lume was a result of only about 2 ours of hotel room daylight. As many of us know, Seiko's Lumibrite is legendary and is still the industry standard for lume.

Here are some things you might want to know. Most of the below and above technical info were culled from the internet, ablogtoread and from lurking other forums. There's so little info out there because this MM was released only in March/April 2009 and is destined only for the Japanese domestic market.

Movement: Seiko 8L35, automatic, hackable, windable, 26 jewels and  28,800 bph. Anti-magnetic and rated for 1000m. Somebody at another forum with the same MM discovered that the 8L35 is actually an UNELABORATED Grand Seiko. Thus this MM is the poor man's Grand Seiko.

Seiko claims the watch is +/- 10 to 15 seconds a day but as is mostly the case, Seiko's accuracy is better. In an Aug 2008 article by Ariel Adams, he said Seiko's high-end Prospex line has been better than even chronometer ratings with accuracy clocking in at +/- 10 to 15 seconds a MONTH.  Somehow I believe him because my Seiko Sumo SBDC 003, a member of the Prospex line, gives really surprising accuracy and based on my experience is about +12 this month.

Case Info and Dimensions: cocktail of components ranging from stainless steel, to titanium and ceramic with a play on PVD and DLC for sme surface coatings.

crystal diameter 30mm    case diameter (bottom) 52mm

case bottom w/ crown 58mm   watch height 18mm

bezel diameter 43mm       lug width 22mm

lug to lug (lugs are bottom of case, not edge)   40mm

top of shroud at widest   46mm

Overall rating on this watch on a scale of 1 to 10? It's an 11. Should have been a 12 if not for the rubber strap, which by the way is 3mm thick and tapers to 20mm at the buckle end. I would have preferred a strap at 24mm though.

This is the marquee Seiko diver and I think will never disappoint me with its accuracy, ruggedness and reliability, quality, immense value given all the technology loaded into it by the Japanese, rarity, substantial build quality that the Prospex line is known for and "kick ass" looks. To me, this is what dreams are made of.

Thanks for looking:):):)

Jeff, congrats repeated here and praise is in order!

Great review and pics - as always your WIS intellect shows big time!yourock.gif

I think the high end Seikos are really undervalued, and should become very sought after in the world of watches in years to come.

Big congrats on the grail Jeff! Nice little review! I think that it will sit better on your wrist with the Zulu strap!;) Those rubber/plastic diving straps are concieved to sit over a diving suite who's ruged-surface...I guess also that the soft rubber of the suite is locking itself inside the waves of the strap...
Not the best for your young tight skin:D.... Try the Zulu amigo and avoid gravity turning your watch around the wrist like a bagle

Thanks for the write-up, I've long though that Seiko does black so well.  That watch is such a great combo of blacks together, it just looks fantastic.

Thanks gentlemen.
Wosto = thanks also for your kind words on my pix but I am not using a true macro and your photos are really the ones to beat

Mark= thanks for your comments on my review. I tried to approach the review differently and I'm glad you liked it

Nic = thanks also for the kind words on Daily Wrist Check. This watch is really ready to rumble

Graham = thanks amigo and I agree that the Seikos, even the entry models and regular divers are greatly undervalued, underrated and underappreciated. They all get bum raps from those with little knowledge. We can forgive them.

Tom = thanks also and your PM

Natevan = thanks and for sure, I will enjoy this

William = thanks and you are so right about the strap on my "young skin". Not only is hair from my head thinning out but my wrist hair sort of joined the picket line toosubtlelaugh.gif and now responding to gravity. I tried a Zulu but the Zulus here in Singapore where I met up with the watch, are all with polished hardware. I also tried plain Pam style rubber but the holes for the screw bars were so small and the fat, very fat, spring bars of the MM just wouldn't go through the holes. I ended up getting a Nato, amigo, but I got the thickest Nato with black, dull hardware. The beauty with Nato, though scrawny versus the mighty Zulu, is that the Nato flows more closely from the lugs and screw bars and this is because the gauge of the material is thinner and is helped by the "underlap" portion that goes under the case. I will try my luck with original Seiko waffle rubber or original Seiko Big 3 (the ones with 3 holes on each side of the 2 strap rig).

Tony = thanks too

Chris = thanks for the kind words on my review. It was way past midnight when  wrote it

Oscar = thnaks for the kind comments on my review. I try yo measure up to the other great reviews of the other 3T WIS

Ricardo = thanks also and roger that: will post more pix and will show the watch as really black. The lighting a the hotel wasn't great when I took the shots and blues and grays were more predominant that time

Aredman and Bozza = thanks also.

By the way gentlemen, there's another very limited MM coming out in a few months. It's nicknamed the "STORMTROOPER". I don't really like it but I am attaching it to deliver the point on the use of ceramics for today's watches. Below are pix stolen from the higuchi website.

From the looks of the tiles and position of yellow flooring braile of the bottom picture, it looks like this was taken in a Tokyo subway.

I don't know how I missed that Jeff, but again, big congrats on this super special Seiko!  This watch is sooooo unique, from the shape to the materials it uses to the special L shape gasket that allows it to do saturation diving without the need of HV...I don't know what to say besides the fact that, it seems way too big for you.  I don't think it suite you well Jeff but:P...I'm a nice guy and will fix this for you, I just PM you my address so you can sent it to mesubtlelaugh.gif.  My wrists are waaaay bigger, at 7" :D.  Also, your Rolex and Pam seems jealous of you eating too much Sushi lately, you know that it's no good create watch envy within your own collection...Hehehe!  I'm just kidding of course!  Seriously, I have never been a fan of their rubber strap, and I highly recommend a thick(3mm +) PVD mesh on this one Jeff.

You are my new Seiko HERO!!! perfect.gifThumbsup3.gif

Quick question. I have decided to change my watch collecting and going the diver route. What is the price point on watches like these? I am in love with the panny daylight and I am sure very expensive.

Hey, nice Seiko... And nice collection. I thank you very much for sharing your photos as well as your view of this watch. It is nice to see comparison photos too, I had never seen that Rolex Deep Sea Sea Dweller and that's nice too, big and chunky.

I know what you mean with the problem of the strap, unfortunately not all wrists are the same and I for once, can't find a rubber strap that is comfortable. But you may want to check out the silicon type straps, they seem to be super soft and if you get the flat kind, you may find something that fit. I also saw some called isofrene or something like that, but never used them so not sure.

I am very glad you got that big black bad Marine Master, I hope you enjoy.

It's been a month, since I got my tuna. It's a great watch.

I have a omega speed master triple day-date, rolex submariner with date, yao bill mk1 and this piece.

In terms of accuracy, seiko tuna is a winner. This piece changed the image of seiko to me.

Thanks, Jeff. If you don't mind, post a review on sea dweller as well.

I am late to the party, Jeff, but holy cr*p thats a beauty! Nice review as always and enough shots to almost feel like we were there with ya for the great unveiling...!

HUGE congratulations - what a beautiful darth MM, mate!

As an aside - are there any strap/lug/mounting options which can get that puppy closer to your wrist the way you want it to be?

Wear well, and congratulations Jeff!

Yup, I've stumbled on to your post quite late, too, Jeff - but I'm glad I did! That's one spectacular watch! You're on a WIS Grail roll! first the tuna, and then the crux! Congratulations, and wear them in good health! (Bigger biceps, too, after a month!)

Hi 3T. I just noticed that I never got to answer all the queries on my MM1000 up to a few months back....including a query on my DSSD.

I promise to revert by tomorrow.ThumbsUp02.gif

hi Jeff, how are you liking the emperor?
I've been contemplating a major buy and this one is on the list too. I have 6.5" wrists, I have a 7549-7010 tuna, but not as big as this one. I think changing straps will help out small wrists like me.
Not sure which way to go.
on the list, emperor, MM300, DSSD, SBGA031, SD600m. ???
For me I'm sorting out the bigger ones. :(
Look forward to your thoughts.

Cheers, Dave.
