My new-to-me FORTIS B-42 Marine Master Day Date landed Friday and I just fell in love with it at first sighthappy guy.gif, right as I open the box and gave it a first look and that does not happen often with me! subtlelaugh.gif  I had been wanting one for a while and either passed for lack of funds or it sold before I made a move or… maybe I was worried its 42mm case with 20mm lugs would be an issue as some had told me it was a smaller watch.

It turns out that that it is PERFECT in size for me, THE sweet spot for sure with a thinner bezel than some of today’s divers, it leaves a lot of dial area making the watch wear bigger than its 42mm size would suggest especially as it is a tad busy with all those second hash marks on both dial and bezel, large numerals, writing on dial and large day/date window. Also the bezel diameter is slightly large than the case’s so it helps with making the watch wear bigger.

It all works real well together, the designers really did an awesome job, the dial is truly stunning, more than my cell phone pics can show(definitely not doing this watch justice). I love the orange second hand sweeping extremely smoothly (amazing actually)over the black dial. The whole dial/hand/bezel combo is awesome as is the contrasting White as white can get numerals and markers on the black dial. The double coated sapphire crystal just seems to disappear at times and you just feel like you could reach in and grab the hands!! It is amazing how it brings out the beauty of the dial and contrast! The case back is also beautiful and the crown shows the Fortis logo as well. The watch finish is very high quality, favorably comparing to more expensive watches. The brushed SS finish is perfect and I also love the lug screw bars, solid, clean look, easy to work with!  Mine came with the FORTIS leather but the prior owner bought a deployant FORTIS clasp for it, which I like better than the also included Fortis tang buckle. Finally, the presentation is also “soigné” with a beautiful leather box and wallet for the papers.ThumbsUp02.gif

My only two cons are the fact that it doesn’t have a screw down crown (which is fine for this kind of watch I suppose but am used to them now J ) and the 20mm lugs are just too narrow, the strap looks so skinny, it’s odd at some angles IMO. However it doesn’t detract from the watch’s overall beauty and quality build. It looks awesome on the wrist  and I think it may look even better on the bracelet giving it substance or a nice thick rubber for the summer activities. I like the 2836 mvt and the second hands just sweeps perfectly, the crown winds smooth and just enough authority, feels real good winding it actually. So now I may be on a hunt for the Fortis bracelet, used hopefully, and a good rubber strap for this beauty.

Here are a few cell shots I took, sorry for the quality of the pics, a camera would definitely help to bring out the beauty of this Fortis with the vanishing crystal J. Thank you for reading guys!

Brice...it is gorgeous!  If the 20mm lugs bother you, they is a relatively easy solution other than simply sending it to me out of disgust...contact one of our great strap makers that are featured here and have a heavy, beefy custom strap made that is "notched" at the lugs and wider below the lugs.  That will give is a wider, more substantial overall look...very similar to the way Seiko handles the bracelet on the Monster!

Great looking Fortis and great pics. Regarding the 20mm lugs, put it on a Di-Modell Chronissimo. The design of this strap will make the whole thing look beefier. I have a Revue Thommen Chrono that had 20 lugs and it really did the trick.

Exceptionally well designed watch. Love the dial and bezel. The 20mm strap size wouldn't be an issue on my wrist. Great buy! sponge bob.gif

The B-42 is an icon, mate. Yours is a beauty! I love it.

I am with KenC on this one. As much as I love bracelets and mesh, this would look the duck's guts on a notched leather strap and would be "personalised" as well.

So new, and you already got it wet??!! subtlelaugh.gif

Wear it in good health sir and congrats on finding the sweet spot.

Well Brice...I'm clearly late in congratulating you on the Fortis B-42 Marinemaster arrival!!!!  But...better late than never, so CONGRATS amigo, and welcome to the club!!!!party.gif  I don't know how I missed this post.

As you already know, this Fortis is one of my favorites (heck, I love both the black and lume dial versions).

Thanks for the great writeup!

Don't let the lack of screw-down crown bother you one bit (unless you forget to push the crown insubtlelaugh.gif)...WatchTime published a detailed article several years back with a comparison test of dive watches (Fortis B-42 Marinemaster, Sinn U2, Breitling Superocean Steelfish, Doxa Sub 750T, a Mido dive watch of some kind, and others). The test was done according to the ISO 6425 diver watch standards which requires the watch be submerged in water at 125% of the rated pressure, duration 60 minutes - 25 bar (250 m) in the case of the Fortis. The watch must continue running without noticeable rate change, and no water intrusion is allowed.

The test was hotly discussed, because initially a Breitling SO Steelfish experienced an imploded crystal and a Doxa Sub 750T Pro stopped running so thus, failed the pressure tests (additional tested samples of the Steelfish and Doxa passed).  Now keep in mind that they have a much higher rated initial water resistance, so an ISO 6425 test is going to be much tougher on those two.

The Fortis Marinemaster went through the test without any issues, though the testers first were curious about the push pull crown as well.  The Fortis Marinemaster and the Sinn U2 were the only 2 watches in the test matching ALL criteria of the ISO 6425 standard (including the readability, bezel markings and other criteria) without any failure during the tests.

My favorite combo on this one is the ss bracelet due to the 20mm lug width, but I've only tried it on the ss bracelet and Fortis rubber deployment.  Ian's suggestion above of a notched leather might be very cool...I might have to try that some time.

Enjoy this sweet Fortis icon Brice!!!...thumbsup.gif
