Arriving this week is the recently introduced Steinhart Apollon.  Initial impressions are very favorable, and the watch lives up to what one would expect from Steinhart in general, which is a piece that over-delivers for the reasonable price of entry IMO.

I really like the unique design of this one with the sandwich dial construction (matte black outer sandwich dial over BGW9 lume, with a very nice horizontal brushed grey/anthracite central portion which takes on a widely varying number of hues and looks depending on the lighting that is present), and the blue highlights on the seconds hand and dial writing seem to really fit nicely with this one.  Titanium case is blasted to perfection (really gorgeous and well done).  The crown design works well with the overall look of this one IMO, and is super easy to grip.  Crown action is solid and screws in and out very positively.

It seems people want to put this one in a specific category of watch (diver, tactical etc…).  The bezel does not rotate on this one (which does not bother me at all)…I see a sports watch that is really beautiful in design and uniquely designed as well IMO…a bit of a ‘toolish’ feel due to the hex screws which allow for quickly and easily changing up the bezel and the strap.  This fixed 12 hour marked bezel gives me a bit of a military feel and theme, as I don’t think it needs to have a 24 hour marked bezel combined with a gmt hand (my two cents worth anyway).  There is a rumored chrono version of this one expected to arrive later this year which should look very cool given the design elements of this one.

Speaking of bezels, this one comes with three (SS, DLC, and Bronze), and the machining tolerance between each bezel and the case is ultra nice and precise.  Bezels slip on and off very easily and precisely with zero slop or wiggle between the inner diameter of the bezel and the outer mounting surface to the case.  Bezels exchange very quickly due to the four hex style screws that mount the bezel to the case.  I decided to install the DLC bezel first, and I expect to mount up the Bronze bezel very soon after I have a chance to “pre-condition” some patina on it…it is just a bit too gold for me fresh out of the case, but I think it will look absolutely killer with some nice patina on it against that nicely blasted Ti case!!!happy guy.gif

The case size is 45mm diameter, and the Lug-to-Lug distance is 56mm (max inner lug distance).  Due to the angular shape of the lug tips, the lug-to-lug measures 54mm at the outermost portion of the lug.  I say all that to say this one wears smaller than a watch with that lug length would indicate (for reference, the lug-bar-center to lug-bar-center distance is 48mm).  Steinhart states the case thickness is 17mm (which includes the slightly domed crystal – with zero distortion due to it being double domed in design)... thickness from caseback to the top of the bezel is right at 16mm according to my measurements.  The watch has great wrist presence due to the substantial case dimensions, but is very well balanced on the wrist due to the titanium case material IMO.

The only slight negative I can think of is regarding the four raised fasteners on the dial.  They somewhat confuse time reading at a quick glance due to their location on the outer portion of the dial between the regular hour markers IMO.  I guess they are trying to make the dial look more sporty, but I might prefer them to be further inboard of the dial and away from the regular markers.

Overall though, the Apollon is a WINNER with a unique look and design, and great value for the dollar IMO. thumbsup.gif

Very nice comments and pix, Chris. I think you are spot on with regard to the dial fastening screws. For me they just throw the dial off and are superfluous. I was lukewarm when first seeing this one but your pix do a great job of showing the great multilevel dial and casework. The Apollon is a real sport indeed!

Enjoy your new addition and thanks for taking the time to post your new arrival.

William, John, Joe, Tony, Mark, and Tony...thank you guys for the kind words on the Apollon!  thankyou.gif

It will be a fun watch to change up the bezel and strap combinations on...really a beautiful piece!

Mark - yes...those raised screws on the dial are sort of a head-scratcher...they are not a total disaster in real use, and I'm definitely getting used to them on the dial, but you are spot on with your "superfluous" comment...they could easily have been done away with altogether, or placed somewhere else on the dial landscape (preferably more inboard).

Congrats Chris! It lOoks great on your wrist, I especially like the second wrist shot where the dial depth is obvious. The black bezel is a good match for it but I personally prefer the bronze one, it looks great and original on the watch. The screws don't bother me. I considered getting this beauty but the size and the L2L might be too much for me.
It looks perfect on your wrist!
Wear it in good health!

Congrats Chris! Great write up, and very informative and interesting read:0)
And pictures are top-notch also.

For some reason I had just assumed that the bezel was unidirectional on this one, so great to get the misunderstanding (maybe not reading the specs as closely as I should have) cleared up.

And agree that the fixed bezel doesn´t exclude it per say, as I in normal day life only use the bezels of my watches to time my pizzas

Looking forward to see that bronze bezel on it, once it grows some patina:0)

Big Congrats, Chris. In my opinion, that's among the best designs I have ever seen in a long time. The bezel/strap options make the variations almost limitless. Surely a fun watch to own and actually use daily.

Enjoy it in good health, amigo

Oscar, Brice, Trent, Murph, Rolf, Graham, Jeff, and William...thank you guys for the continued kind words on the review and the pics.   thankyou.gif  Very glad it proved helpful for fellow 3T WIS.

The Apollon is a very unique and cool piece.

Brice - yes, I expect that the Bronze bezel will be my favorite in the long run...just a bit too much gold fresh out of the bezel case, but it will get mounted soon!

Thanks again guys.

Hey Stew

My Apollon arrived and I am stoked. Mine came with a black leather strap and not grey like advertised on the site(and your post). I see what you mean about the dial screws.....makes a quick glance quite challenging.I think for the price its a helluva lot of watch.

Mine ran about +20s pd out the box but its down to about +2 now. I cant wear it 24/7 as it arrived hot on the heals of a Magrette Bronze and a PJS Marine Auto, so right now I am in watch Valhalla, keeping 3 new acquisitions all ticking merrily

One word of caution be careful when changing the bezels more exactly with taking the screws in and out, some owners of the Proteus which the Apollon is based upon have had issues with the screw holes becoming stripped. I am one of them but repaired it myself and now with some very mild loctite it is fixed.

Chris, great write up of the Apollon.. I must say that with all your details and pics, if I would be on the fence with this one, you would have convinced me!!subtlelaugh.gif...

I like every single detail about this watch, it's inner dial color contrasting with the outer black color, the blue second hand, ti case, the bezels, etc.. the only deal breaker for me would have to be the lack of rotation on the bezel, sadly I have to have a rotating bezel on my watches and the lack of is really a bummer... OTOH, I still think this particular model is gonna be a winner for Steinhart!

Please keep posting pics...my love.gif
