Hi 3T. I'd like to introduce my new arrival to you. This is my very first purchase ever of a pre-owned piece (except for my previous fixation with Seiko vintages), it being LNIB and in my analysis, deserving a 99.5% grade.

The SD was discontinued in 2008/2009 to make way for the more robust DSSD, which was issued a couple of years later. The SD went "ping, ping, ping" on my sonar as early as 2005/2006 but somehow other pieces distracted me back then. And when I was totally ready to hook one, I couldn't find the finest specimen I could get my hands on...until this week. To me, the 6 or 7 year wait was worth it.

Why I just adore the SD? Rated to 4,000 ft (4x more than the Sub), HEV, 2mm taller than the Sub because of the thicker crystal, a very discrete date window (no cyclops), PLUS its rich relationship and history with the divers of COMEX. Graham, in his post greeting this newbie, is totally correct to say that the SD is the best Sub ever.

The SD is also the only diver on the Rolly line that went through the least number of changes, being discontinued in 2008/2009 with just the addition of the HEV. The Sub line, on the other hand, has been through a host of changes: a maxi dial, ceramic bezels in black or green, bling bling on indeces, drilled lug holes, alu bezels in green, clasp upgrades, chromalight, parachrom etc etc. The SD just refused to change. WOW!

Here are a few pics.

The entire set consists of the box, all the papers, 2 extra links and link bars, watch care booklets, a Buelhmann table with decomp guide at the reverse side, and even an unused bracelet adjusting tool.

Here are some more pics:

The HEV, a great addition. This was developed with the help of COMEX back then when immersion divers experienced crystals popping out while they were decompressing inside their decomp chambers. This piece of history and heritage with COMEX, I think, is what made the SD a worthwhile hunting target for me.

The sapphire glass is 2mm thicker and slightly more convex than the usual Sub's crystal. Note the exceptional condition of the bracelet...never been scrubbed/restored.

The very simple caseback which I think inspired the text inscribed on the rehaut of the DSSD.

A wrist shot

Here's a lume shot without the aid of a torch or flashlight, just old-fashioned sunlight

If you're on the lookout for a no nonsense diver to collect, the SD is a very serious option. I'm just incredibly happy with it and I think this will make my diver line almost complete (2 liner Sub next???).

Thanks for looking.

Jeff
About time!  Nothing to add, other than that I think this one is going to become a real classic any day soon.  In my neck of the woods, good specimens already sell for more than the last new price.  Congrats on a great catch.
I'm guessing your next Sub will be a non-COSC no-date 14060?whichone.gif

Sweet addition Jeff!!!bravo.gif

Thanks for the writeup and great perspective photos!  This one has been (and continues to be) a very long term grail of mine.  I love the extra case thickness and the clean crystal with lack of magnified date.

I often think a preowned Sea Dweller could be my very first Rolex purchase.

Enjoy it buddy!!!happy guy.gif

A timeless classic. I miss mine and with the way the prices of Rolexs are rising a replacement is sadly going to be out of reach for a long while!

Thanks again, Graham, Nick, Chris, Herr Philipp, Antoine and Skool.

@Graham.....yes, you hit the bullseye. Will be on the prowl for a LNIB or MINT 2-liner,/size]

@Antoine.....ha! How I wish I were an AD, amigo.

@Chris....yes, this might even be a better first Rolly than the Sub and have both qualities in one piece.

@Herr Philipp....these are the measurements in mm:
Sub SD
case size 2 to 8 41.5 41.5
case size w/ crown 38 38
main bezel 39.5 40
height 13 15 (due to crystal)
lug width 19.5 19.5 (not 20???)
case near lugs 29 25

The SD looks a tiny wee bit smaller than Sub 116610 but about the same as the Subs 16610 and 16613. It is noticeably fatter/taller though.

@Skool.....easy for me to say this now but you shouldn't have released it back then...

ThumbsUp02.gif

Thanks for the specs of the watch Jeff !

I would have thought they would be bigger. But this is the best size for this watch I think.

Your wish is my command, amigo. I took some shots of both today and will compose my thoughts for a post of a side-by-side. ThumbsUp02.gif

Nice one Jeff - another beauty. Have you considered a "double red" SD? Regardless - this beaut with the thick crystal and the perfect detailing was a mission worth the wait. Big props, mate!

Thanks Sheriff, Rolf and Ian.

@William....my moods are changing and the non-cyclops models are becoming very intersting for me.

@Rolf....you can do it, Rolf. same route you took on the Emperor Tuna, amigo.

@IanM....i never considered the Double Red SD whether or not it's the 16660 or the meters first or any of the other reds. I simply can't afford any of them and they are also too hard to find in Excellent or Mint condition. Somehow, I also prefer to collect the modern versions and lean on their new materials and lubricants.
