Lately I've been thinking it's about time I collect a couple of vintage chronos that I have always wanted before they get so scarce I have to pay a premium for them...
Here is one of them!

Picked this up from the forums in original condition with original boxes and paperwork.
Yesterday it spent the day in the ultrasonic spa getting 40 years of grime removed. Followed by a new crystal and caseback gasket and some grease on the original petrified chrono and crown gaskets...they will have to be replaced. Just a little touching up on the bracelet and it looks wearable. The case still needs a finish "reset" but I wanted to wear it!

It's keeping great time but since it's service history is unknown it will have to go in to someone more brave than I for a spit-n-polish on the movement!

Like a kid in a candy store I picked up a 6138-3002 the other day too, also original un-restored and its a one owner watch... pictures of it to follow once it's fit for photos...

thanks guys, I've always had an itch for these old seiko chrono's they are every bit as cool as I had imagined.

Crystal uses a rubber gasket, I think the bezel holds the crystal down when it's installed I've been afraid to check and see if it will fall out dog smile.gif

...pushers are held in by the movement ring so when you remove the ring the pushers come right out for easy access and cleaning. Just really well designed and small for a chrono at a normal size 11 or so...

Anyway I'm glad I finally added it to my collection!

Chris, as you probably know, my main area of horological interest is with vintage chronographs.  I find them fascinating.  Real little engineering marvels too!
That is an iconic vintage chrono.  Now go for the matching Citizen bullhead too!
Congrats and enjoy!thumbsup.gif

Congrats! Nice vintage: This bullhead system makes it also more comfortable on the wrist since the pushers don't dig the back of the handThumbsUp02.gif

Yes, Chris - its a classic, and that bracelet is nice, too..

This and the blue dialled version are really nice. Lots of "refinished" stuff coming from parts of Asia these days (at least they clearly state so when selling the ones I have seen on the bay), and an original without the Thai copy bezel insert and in original condition is worth a premium.  ThumbsUp02.gif

Zeno still make a nice bullhead with a 7750 (I had one and sold it in the continuing search for "the one" :) ), and the Citizen that Graham mentions is a nice one, too.

The all-time classic (IMHO) is the Omega bullhead  - but that is such an astronomical dollar now that we will rarely see them out in the wild because owners will hide them in their safes!

As to the Seiko - well done and enjoy wearing it! Another nice vintage Seiko joins the fold!

Cheers - Ian

I don't worry so much about replacement parts, I just keep the original parts in it's corresponding watch box for a rainy day if that's the case.

The big problem I have with these things out of Asia is they all look like they have been removed from corpses.

There is always really bad rust pitting in the caseback gasket ring groove and sometimes even into the sides of the case and caseback threads, if there is pitting like that in the caseback area then you can be sure there will be pitting like that in the multi piece bezel's that these old chronographs have so about the only thing good left on the watch might be the movement parts regardless of how nice they polish them up for eBay!

I have also scored a one owner 6138-3002 in unrestored condition, from here in the US no rust or pitting but it's still in worse shape than the bullhead so it will be a while before it's fit for wrist duty, I have also just taken a leap of faith and picked up a couple of decent condition 3002's from eBay, at least one is clean enough to be useable the other is really clean so I suspect it will be an asia rust bucket from the back....

I should end up with at least one clean bullhead and one clean 3000 series when I'm done which is what I was after!

lol I love being addicted to watches!

Chris/IanM....long before I joined this forum I was a serail collector of vintage Seikos...many of them Bullheads. You are right about the corpse thing because many of them actually come from SEVERAL corpses (LOL).

A trader usually buys Bullheads by the tens of kilos from the open market in all sorts of condition ranging from very bad to very good.....retrieves all good parts to yield maybe a kilo or 2 of good and complete Bullheads and then chucks out all the unusable parts.

Your Bullhead looks really good given the age and history of the model.

Enjoy!

BAM! I bought the black/blue one too chickendance.gif

this one isn't nearly as stock but has had recent service so it will also make a great starting place for the black bullhead!
