This is what we have been working on the last two weeks and why I haven't been posting much - Cub Scout Pinewood Derby!

My son's car:

My car for the fathers' race:

His car is as fast as last year's winner on our test track.  I don't care if I win, I have more fun making models :D

Weigh in is at 12:30 Sunday, race at 2:00, hopefully I'll have positive results tomorrow!

Cheers,
Griff

Thank you Pax!
Indeed I am proud of him, he did most of the work himself this year, from cutting the block to sanding it, spraying the paint and clear coat.  He even helped true up the wheels :)  I won't let him use the Dremel yet, but maybe in his last year I will.

I told him, win or lose it is all about spending time with dad and good sportsmanship.  My boys won the last 2 years in a row so other Scouts and dads are gunning for us.  It should be a good race!

Cheers,
Griff

...and the winner is....

My younger son hand6.gifhand6.gifhand6.gif
The winner is determined by lowest cumulative time over 6 races (2 per lane/3 lane 32 foot aluminum track).
My son was first of 39 boys, new track record of 2.611 seconds, 208.9 (scale) MPH, cumulative time over 6 races was 15.758 sec., average time 2.626 sec, average speed 207.7 MPH.  2nd place was pretty close at 15.840 sec., 206.6 MPH.  There were a few Scouts that didn't make a car unfortunately.  The boys had a lot of fun, the software worked flawlessly, and my wife and I are dead tired.

Dad didn't do too bad either, 4th in the Adult race, average speed 202.5 MPH.  My McLaren developed the dreaded rear end "wiggle", a side to side oscillation from being a bit out of alignment.

Next up, the District race in 2 weeks when we get to do it all over, but for at least twice as many Scouts

Cheers,
Griff

Thanks guys! :)
I never was a Scout when I was a kid, so I got a second chance and get to spend as much time as possible with my boys.  Next up is a Pack weekend camping trip and the District Derby in April, then camping trips in May - Boy Scout Order of the Arrow Ordeal with my older son, and Parent Pal weekend with my younger son.  I love it!

Cheers,
Griff
