Was going out to some shopping tonight and as I was driving along, I see this buck heading full bore for the road. i had open road ahead of me so I floored the fuel on my truck and even went out in the other lane.  I was listening closely as our paths converged hoping I missed him and SMACK!  So I pulled over.  He was laying on the road, still moving. :( So I prodded him with a stick to see if he would jump up or anything.  No movement.  So, I grabbed him by the horn and drug him off the road.  I didnt have my pistol with me so I called my buddy thats a game warden and he showed up in a few mins. and put it out of its misery.  Luckily I didnt have my gun.  He told me you arent allowed to kill n animal after its been hit.  Never knew that.  So, I called my other friend up thats a butcher and he said to bring it on over and he would take care of it for me.  So, we will have a freezer full of deer meat this year.   Hated hitting it,  I gave up hunting years ago.  Just dont like killing things anymore.  Sometimes in archery season I get the urge to grab the bow and sit in the woods but I never have a license.  Oh well.  On the bright side, it only put a small dent in the bedside of my truck.  My friend thats a body man (I know, I have lots of friends) is gonna stop by tomorrow and see if he cant pop it out without even having to paint it.  So, That was my evening. cat28.gif

No doubt. ;)

Glad no one was hurt and your damage was minimal. I consider myself very fortunate to have never had such an encounter n all the years I've lived in deer country. Although I did just miss one when I was riding my Harley. A few days later we had a group come into the hospital who was in from Germany for the Harley anniversary get run through by a big buck.

I would have grab the horn and break his neck by twisting: No trace and it could be blamed on the collision...
Best to put them out of misery as fast as possible:?
We got a lot of reindeers around here and they are so stupid that they just look and wait on the road: Never hitted one but with the Grand Cherokee it's no big deal coz they got short legs...
Still, I allways got a big knife in the car: You never know...
I hope to never hit a moose

I would not use a big knive to kill an animal like that: There's no penetration on those knifes(survival or Bowie)...
Just got a knife in case off...Better than having nothing.
On a little deer, the best is to break the neck as I said: If you can't, just drive...
Stabing an animal is risky: I would recommand to penetrate a thin blade between the neck cervicals...I you can;)
People from Lapland are stabing the reindeers in the heart: Thats' the old way but they know what they do since thousand years...

He still had his one antler so I was pushing my luck just by dragging him off the road.  Luckily he didnt jump up and take a run at me.

Sort of related...I saw a story on Fox new network, a couple of days ago,  about a buck attacking the statue of an elk on some guys lawn near a farm field, out west somewhere..

Poor buck thought it was real and was probably in rut and defending his turf....

Well.....he hit it so hard he knocked it over and in the process he killed himself..

True story....

I guess I was pretty lucky to go this long without hitting one.  There are deer everywhere around here.  Last night at 1 am when I went to leave Shelby out, there was a buck following a doe through the back yard. I got within 20 feet or so of him till he realized I was there.  I had the spot light on him the whole time and he never noticed.  He was too busy following that doe.    toon1.gif
