Do you ever notice how life has a way of taking over? I have. As many of you know, I'm married and have a little boy. I also work full time as an Electrician and serve part-time in the Army National Guard. All these things have kept me relatively engaged and busy the last couple years since returning from Iraq. But i've noticed over the last several months that these thing have been taking up more and more of my personal time. Especially my little boy. He's growing like a weed and showing more intelligence by the day. He celebrated his second birthday today and I'm really starting to notice how as he's getting older, we are constantly working around being engaged with him to get things done like cook dinner, do laundry, take a shower and clean house. And now with my wife working 3+ days a week and even bringing work home sometimes, well.... it leaves little time for us. Either alone or together. I bring all this up because I've enjoyed the warm and friendly support of you all over the last 2-3yrs and have made many friends here and I'm sure I'll make many more. I just want everybody to know that I'm still around and haven't forgotten this place. I just have so very little time to log in and participate. I don't foresee it getting better anytime soon as we are starting to gear up for another deployment at the end of the year. Afghanistan this time. I'll keep in touch as best I can. Cheers....... Jeffrey. |

Jeffrey Strongs, brother! Keep going about life the way you know best. Instincts are inevitably correct. Ride this cycle. It will turn in your favour soon. Above all, enjoy your son at that age. They grow up far too soon, and there's no turning the clock back... |

So true. It seems hard to scrape out time for ourselves. There is nothing more important that raising your child and having a good family life. Keep on keeping on and remember wherever you end up you always have a crew at 3T! |

Thanks everyone for the warm replies. Just so there's no misunderstanding..... I absolutely agree with everyone that my family comes first. I just wanted everyone to know why I hadn't been around much and that I miss the interaction with the 3T crew. Last edited on Thu May 20th, 2010 09:05 pm by murphy j |

My son is 10 months old and myself and my wife have to work around him. Not hoovering though as that has to wait until weekends as by time I get home he is winding down for a sleep. I had a similar conversation with my dad and he told me "no matter how hard it gets or difficult it seems you will always manage" which is true I have found, I still find time here and there for stuff to be done etc and he also said "you miss the time you had but when he grows up you will appreciate the time you get back much more" Also at the end of the day you can point and laugh when your kids go though it all, you can cuddle your grand children one day in the distant future but the advantage is you can give them back when your done and have a great nights sleep!! Not sure if it helps at all but it made me feel better. Neo |

Jeffrey.Yάsou my friend. I have two little girls (7 and 6) and can easily understand what time means when kids are involved. A childhood friend of mine has served a six month duty in Afganistan. When he came back he showed me hundreds of photos. They weren't pretty. Our troops there have a supporting role. Engineering and medical support. I have some questions regarding your going there. Do citizens in the US have to join the National Guard? In Greece all men have to do their millitary service but only professionals are sent to missions abroad. My thoughts will be with you and your family, my friend. From Alexandroupoli, Greece Dimitrios. Attachment: Night port pano.jpg (Downloaded 24 times) |

The short answer to your question is No, military service in the US is all voluntary. The National Guard is considered a professional force nowadays, but hasn't always been so. In my case and many others, the National Guard is a way for me to continue my military service after leaving the regular Army, yet move forward with a regular life and limit the hardships for family that are so often seen with the regular Army. We are controled at a state level, but can be called up every few years to do up to a year of Federal service. We also are used at a state level to help in cases of civil unrest and natural disasters. |
