I can't believe with all the WIS here from around the World we are not talking about the World Cup!....some great matches have already taken place and it's only going to get better once some of the true stars of the game get moving...and some new stars emerge!! dancing.gif

I did post some snippets elsewhere.
I am drenched in "football"( as FIFA insists we call the game.)
I have watched most of the games thus far.  South Africa drawing 1-1 against Mexico was a great game.  We played the best game in years!
The USA/England game was lifeless and outright boring.
The Netherlands / Denmark game was interesting.  NL won 2-0.  One goal was an own goal by a Danish player!  He partly redeemed himself by executing a spectacular save soon thereafter.
This afternoon New Zealand is playing Slovakia.  Hope NZ do better than what the Socceroos did, getting beaten 4-0!
The Italy / Paraguay game almost caused a stir when P led until the last quarter of the game, when the reigning world champions scored a goal to draw the game.  Italy sure didn't look like world champs!

Haven't seen as many games as I'd like...should be some good action as things move ahead. I'm pulling for the US team, of course. I miss my playing days.

This game is on right now, second half.  Tell you what, North Korea is playing a great game!  Brazil just scored one incredible goal right now, but the Koreans are certainly not being annihilated.  Surprise, surprise!

I have been keeping up as much as I can!!
I agree Germany seem to always manage to come up with a team that fit like cogs in a watch while England have amazing players but work together like bubblegum in hair.

is everyone forgetting the U.S.A beat Spain in the Competitors Cup?...but the Swiss ended their 12 game winning steak and maybe that will change the Cup....Brazil was still the favorites coming in and it's still anyone's guess right now until we see who survives the 2nd matches!...Slovenia was talking trash to the U.S today but it only brought a chuckle from the U.S goalie!....big match for us on Friday!!!

I'm using my DVR to record every World Cup game, but I usually catch the games, live, through the ESPN Radio streaming audio.  The DVR has become my highlight reel.

I think USA played very well against Serbia's 12 man team....crap.gif
Seriously, the third "goal" should have been allowed!
I must say, I can't understand why they don't use electronic aids and second umpires / referees in soccer like they do in cricket and rugby.  The acting of soccer players is something else!.......oh my.gif

I think it adds to the game really, I never get so mad at any other sport as I do at football.
Yes they should use the cameras for replays but we would have nothing to moan about after! Nope I am English we can moan at most things with little effort.

The US got Hosed!

That was one of the worst calls I've ever seen! They were holding three players at once and we get the foul?

unlike sports in the States there are no monitors in these huge futbol stadiums across the world so many have never seen instant replay as we have throughout the matches in S.Africa....had any country seen what this moron of a ref called against the U.S in stealing a winning goal from us he would have been killed....and that is why there are no monitors or instant replays in these stadiums as it would only embroil the already over passionate hearts of the fans to the point of riot....it is what it is and we here in the states have to live with it and play on but rest assure as many have now seen it on the TV and news the U.S has a new found o love of many that has grown because of it which will become very important if we continue to survive and fans of those countries that have fallen from the ranks come to our aid in cheering us on.....this is the greatest sport in the world for this reason that it brings people together from around the World cheering their Countries and every team left as the stage dwindles down to the last 2 teams standing....it's anyone's and everyones game from beginning to end and may the best Team Win !bravo.gif

Ok Australia is out now. It is still mathematically possible but i doubt we can win serbia 3-0 and ghana over germany. :(  USA is well poised to go into the next round after england drew 0-0 with algeria. i think its time for me to jump on the argentina maradona bandwagon! As I stated earlier I'm not a soccer fan but being a sports fan in general that was a pretty crappy call and I know nothing about this sport....I saw during the coverage of the US Open tonight that the ref that made the call will not be officiating any more games in this World Cup bravo.gif

I've been trying to watch as much of the World Cup as I can.
I agree with Neo's sentiment that the performance by England is just sloppy. However, from my point of view there is nothing worst,as to what has happened to the French.

1 player sent back to France.
1 player and 1 trainer must be separated from each other
due to confrontation.
The team refused to train on Sunday and on top all of
this mess,Director of the French Team Resigns.

But at least that is interesting, are they falling apart or building up an excuse to why performance is not very good.

In my opinion I think is a little bit of a falling
part and an excuse for not playing as well as they should be.

Well, although South Africa beat the French 2-1 today, both teams have come to the end of their world cup dreams.  Uruguay beat Mexico 2-1 in the same group. Both teams go through to the round of 16.
I can only guess what reception the French team is going to get when they get back home.oh my.gif

I tell you what...Japan are playing really well 3-1 against Denmark, that's really good!!

Here is the highlights of Italy's game,

This was a bit shocking as Simon said, the above link is a video.

Italy going home early was a shocker!....goes to show what can happen to a defending championship team in 4 years....not having their all-star goalie and Pirlo not playing in the 1st two matches due to injury hurt Italy....when he came in late to todays match playing injured his presence was felt by all but too little too late....he is a world class gentleman on and off the field imo!ThumbsUp02.gif

....I agree Neo....Japan is very impressive....quick on the ball and can strike from anywhere....their goalie is awesome as well!

That was just a shambles, England have an amazing team but cannot work together for s**t. All our new managers make the same mistake of drafting all the best players and when they get them together a primary school team could beat them.
Germany on paper have a worse team but they have one thing England always lacks.....they can work as a TEAM!!
Germany deserve that game I am just ashamed that England had their arse handed to them on a plate again by Germany when it counts the most to us.
Balls to the English side they should have done better its embarrassing, I hope we play the under 21's side next world cup it will do better.

Oh may I also add I thought USA played great in that last game and it was a shame they lost. It was so close it terms of skill in that game and opportunity played in favour of the opposition. USA are going to be stronger next time!!

throughout the entire World Cup the referees have been terrible!...once again changing the outcome of a match and the minds of the players and the momentum of the match ...it's time FIFA takes a long hard look at technology... at the very least goal line technology that can help in determining what is a goal and what is not like in Hockey!...
....FIFA claims they want to keep the game pure by not using modern technology and yet the Refs have ear-pieces that they communicate with the other refs with that tell them to watch  players who are involved in fouls that the head ref may have missed and subsequent yellow and red cards as well as penalty kicks have been issued using this technology so imho FIFA is full of it!

...not only has the USA suffered at the hands of the officials but every team out there including England who had a pure goal today that went unseen by any official on the field but was seen by millions watching the match!....this goal may have not done anything for the final outcome in some minds but we will never know as it wasn't granted!....the mind of a futbol player and a team can change quickly and the momentum of a match can be determined by a bad call as much as a good call but there is nothing greater to boost moral than a goal!
The World Cup is the largest sporting event in the World and it's about time they ...meaning FIFA gets into the new Millenium with some technology that will benefit the game and even the playing field across the board...maybe with this new technology the USA will finally get involved in trying to learn the game and enjoy it as much as the entire World...rant off!

Well, although South Africa beat the French 2-1 today, both teams have come to the end of their world cup dreams.  Uruguay beat Mexico 2-1 in the same group. Both teams go through to the round of 16.
I can only guess what reception the French team is going to get when they get back home.oh my.gif

grrr I'm so angry! I would like nothing more than to knock each one of them out and ban them from the next world cup. There are no excuses for their outrageous off field behavior and reall poor team performance on field considering their individual talent!! They could not come
together as a team and work as professional... It maybe a sport to us but let's not forget it's their job and they paid way too much to do it especially this bad!!! They brought too much anger, frustrations and baggage in general to play well. It's a shame. They shamed our country, very much a soccer nation, and set a really bad example for our youth too!mad.gif

Wow another red blunder!! :( Mexico just suffered another ref obvious error and this further highlights the need for more technology as the refs obviously can't keep up!!! What a shame!! Such a goal is
a state-of-mind and therefore game changer!! Pity!!
But Argentina does have agreat team.. Such talents, great ball handling skills, team plays well and can transform opportunities into goals like no one else!! Mexico can't make defensive errors!!

Alan Shearer "We said they improved in the last game and needed to improve again to go through but they didn't get anywhere near it. They were hopeless from start to finish."

Alan Hansen "The debate will rage on about the Frank Lampard goal but I cannot believe how bad England were. Against Algeria they were abysmal but today they were four levels below that."

Lee Dixon "You have to put a performance on at this stage in the tournament but it was probably the worst defensive team performance I've seen. Quite frankly we were awful and we got ripped to pieces"

Harry Redknapp "It was a massive disappointment. Germany were a much, much better side"

Chris Waddle "The FA sit on their backsides and do nothing tournament after tournament after tournament. Why don't they listen? Why don't they look at other countries and ask 'how do they keep producing talent?"

I am not sure myself where this reputation we get for thinking we are the best at football comes from but I hear it a lot. To be honest we get excited and hope but never think we are the best......we just hope that we can bring a world cup home....do not let a bunch of drunk yobs depict the England team....we have hopes just like all contries that enter.

Hope this isn't considered "trolling", but it is just a really boring sport to me. I'd rather push a lawnmower around. That said, and as a fan of other sports including football, (not to be confused with futbol) I agree with oag, with technology and instant replays immediately available, there really is NO excuse for any officiating organization not to take advantage of them. I certainly wouldn't want to be a ref who see's his bad call 12 seconds later on a stadium bigscreen, along with everybody there, and not be able to withdraw the penalty, or award the touchdown, or not screw up a perfectly pitched game. just sayin.

I myself enjoy watching. Like the fast pace of the game but to end games with a tie to me is lame. My Dad raised me to win. And if you can't win there is no point of playing in the first place. LOL Tie games? that is for children.

A Big +1 from me on your comments Oscar (I agree 100%thumbsup.gif)...Despite the very exciting and excellent games in the World Cup, the poor referee'ing that has been pervasive throughout the entire World Cup has taken away from the great gameplay and HAS and WILL affect the final outcome of this great World Cup.

...which is really such a pity...crap.gif

The U player got red card but the goal was annulled and the Ghanian player missed the penalty and then went on to lose the match. Wat the!!!?? AFRICA HAS BEEN ROBBED ONCE AGAIN. crap.gif

The game was great.  That goal by Von Bronckhorst must be the goal of the series!
The vibe was something else.  We walked the 1.5 miles from downtown to the stadium, and it was an unbelievable carnival experience.
This morning the city is hung over because no more games will be hosted here.

To be honest I am routing for Germany.
They have played very well all the way through showing great speed and effort.
Spain is going to be hard to beat though.

Wow I was actually surprised of the outcome.. I did not get to see the game (Some of us gotta work ya know ;) )so can't comment on whether Spain's win was earned & deserved or not.. But if I had bet, I would have bet on Germany. They have played so well, as a team showing great skills, team work and physical abilities as well. They were top notch in scoring too transforming opportunities into goals... oh well!
Spain - Netherlands will be a heck of a game! Can't wait!

What can I say...

Spain had 57% ball possession,
which dominated the Germans.
I too was rooting for Germany,
but to my astonishment it was the
German Defenders, who had
literally stood in front of the goal post and watched the header by Puyol...disappointing effort.

Congratulations Spain!

Although I wished for the Netherlands to win, Spain deservedly won the cup.
It was the worst spectacle of the entire event in my book.  A record number of yellow cards, and poor sportmanship right across the board.
Anyway, the hype and excitement here will be missed from today.  The tournament was a great boost for South Africa, and a huge success.

I'm happy for the Spaniards who have been playing well consistently aside
from that Switzerland initial game. Of the two teams they were the ones I was rooting for. But I was disappointed in the yellow cards and sportsmanship too:) ah well! I can't wait for the next world cup!:)
