Guys and gals,

Unfortunately, one of my work PCs was hit with one of the nasty spywares that was similar to what I experienced last week at my home PC. This time the spyware is called "PESTTRAP"!!! It just installed itself without you knowing it!!!

It prompts you that you PC is infected with certain spywares and need certain software to clean it! This is not a simple software that you can use the "Add/Remove" programs from your PC's control panel! Even if you successfully use the "Add/Remove" programs to uninstall it, there will be some lingering files or folders in your PC which not everyone knows how to get rid of it!

For my last case which I was hit with the spyware SPYFALCON(whch was installed by itself too!!!!), I went to a PC forum http://www.castlecops.com, which is very good and helpful forum, and read the posts there and followed the procedures. Below are a few links from that forum, in which that forum actually writes a general but EFFECTIVE procedures for everyone who is hit with these spywares. Click on the links:

First read this(Intro):
http://wiki.castlecops.com/Malware_Removal_and_Prevention:_Introduction

Then read this to proceed to a DIY removal steps:
http://wiki.castlecops.com/Malware_Removal_and_Prevention:_Overview

If the spyware still persists after you followed those instructions above, do POST A NEW THREAD here:
http://castlecops.com/f67-Hijackthis_Spyware_Viruses_Worms_Trojans_Oh_My.html

And wait for help from the admin team there! And there are very responsive and helpful! Though sometimes they take up to 4-5 days to reply one's posts, but I MUST GIVE THEM THE CREDITS as the number of posts there are like HELL!!!

In my lastest case in which one of my work PCs was hit with "PESTTRAP", I am going to attempt to remove it myself with the instruction there.

And DO NOT FORGET to read the TIPS on the links above about future prevention measures of reinfection or attack by other spywares.

I'll keep you posted.

Gee, I don't even know if I should go there. Ken C will be lurking in the wings to blast me. :D So, rather than discuss differences, let just deal with facts. As 90-95% of the market is Windows based computers and operating systems, if you want to mess with people's computers you are going aim at the biggest target (i.e. Windows systems). And, Windows is the de-facto standard in business, government and most industry. So, if you want disrupt the world you are going to create spyware, adware, worms, and viruses for Windows.

Mac has been basically ignored for years. No viruses, no worms, no spyware has been created to attack its operating systems. Well, maybe a couple here and there. Mac's newest operating system is a little tougher to hack as well. But, two worms have been put out this year as the Mac OS has gained new popularity on the success of the iPod. Mac recently switched to Intel processors and that has also raised fears that they will be more of a target now for viruses. We will have to see. So far only a handful have been discovered vs. hundreds of thousands for the PC.

:D:D:D  The biggest difference is price! :D:D:D Not to mention the closed architecture! :X

There is a reason that most, by a huge percentage, of all of the computers in use in business (and personally) are PC as opposed to MAC (think about it:)) and yes, their success does make them a target and cause problems!  But their is a reason for their overwhelming success!

That said, I just finished building a new PC using the new 64bit AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice Core, ASUS MB, Seagate 160GB SATA HD, 1GB DDR RAM, MSI Nividea GeFORCE 256MB DDR Graphics card and the new Microsoft Windows XP 64 Operating System................ZZZZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

Yes, you do get what you pay for. Viruses, spyware, adware, etc. :P I've owned MANY a PC. I have built several. I even have some as door stops here in the house. :D:P I appreciate all of what Ken has to say. I used to say everything he spouts now. Until one day I finally tried a serious Mac system. I haven't looked back since. :dude:

Well said............now..... that said...........nothing you've said negates the absolute dominance of the PC in the business world where virtually everything is a risk vs reward situation.  Obviously, the business world feels that the "rewards" of using PC based systems and networks far outweighs the "risks".  Otherwise, the business world would be a MAC world.....Jobs would be living in the BG house and Bill would be looking for investors to keep the hardware division of his company viable (BTW........Microsoft doesn't even make PC's, never have...........it was an IBM product...........Billy is only a software guy!). :P But ultimately, at the individual level, it all comes down to personal preference.  Hey.............remember when UNIX, Xenix, LINUX, et al was the answer!!!:D

Guys, I solved that problem today and did a clean up! This PESTTRAP is not as bad as the Spyfalcon!:)

Now you guys got me thinking about PC and Mac. Mac is not BAD! But seriously, if MAC is much better than PC, then I believe A LOT OF BUSSINESS whether BIG or small firms would be using Mac instead of PC. And if that's the case, Bill Gates would not have been ranked #1 richest man in the world for so many years and running. I mean volume speak for itself.

I mean BIG firms have IT experts and Program Analysts, they should know if PC or Mac is good. Now that's said, I wonder what is US Pentagon using? PC or Mac???? Any idea?

Never underestimate the competition. Never underestimate Steve Jobs. While your hero Uncle Bill lost BILLIONS last week in stock value based on reports of further delays of his Vista Operating system, Apple continues to grow a little stronger. Yeah, a measly 4% increase is what you're thinking, but the increase can only be coming from gaining back lost ground and getting new users. Baby steps, they may be, but they are steps up and not not down.

Jacky, Vista is being delayed for the same reasons you are having troubles now. Security issues. Security issues, Security issues. And the beat goes on...

Apple Reports Second Quarter Results
Revenue Grows 34 Percent Year-over-Year; Earnings Increase 41 Percent

CUPERTINO, California—April 19, 2006—Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2006 second quarter ended April 1, 2006. The Company posted revenue of $4.36 billion and a net quarterly profit of $410 million, or $.47 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $3.24 billion and a net profit of $290 million, or $.34 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 29.8 percent, equivalent to the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 43 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

Apple shipped 1,112,000 Macintosh® computers and 8,526,000 iPods during the quarter, representing 4 percent growth in Macs and 61 percent growth in iPods over the year-ago quarter.

“We’ve generated over $10 billion in revenue and almost $1 billion in earnings in the first half of fiscal 2006,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Our transition to Intel processors is going very well, and our music business just experienced another quarter of outstanding growth.”

“We’re very pleased to report the second highest quarterly sales in Apple’s history, resulting in year-over-year revenue growth of 34 percent and earnings growth of 41 percent,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO. “Looking ahead to the third quarter of fiscal 2006, we expect revenue of about $4.2 to $4.4 billion. We expect GAAP earnings per diluted share of about $.39 to $.43, including an estimated $.04 per share expense impact from non-cash stock-based compensation, translating to non-GAAP EPS of about $.43 to $.47.”

Michael, well piece of info indeed!:):):)

But you are right in a way, this is for the short term or short run only. When VISTA is up and running, it will be BOOM TOWN CHARLIE for Unclie Bill! Just think of it, every second that ticks is like hitting a JACKPOT for him over copyrights and pattented issues. It is just like before WinXP, there were Win2000(not so well received), WinMe(a failure IMO), and then later WinXP. I think VISTA might have problems now but I believe they are working them out.

I am not saying Mac is not good. But have you ever asked yourself and wonder, WHY PC users are still clinging on PC & waiting for VISTA? Why not swing to Mac instead? Yes no doubt that  there are many like you who had jumped the wagon, but there are millions around still remain faithful with PC.

Seriously, as a layman myself, I do not know why. But I know there must be a reason or reasons that people are staying put.

Well that's said, we just have to sit back and watch the "movie" to see its ending. .....:P:P:P

Jacky,

I hold no illusion that Mac is ever going to replace Windows. What would all the IT departments have to do if companies switched to Mac OS? They'd all be out of a job. People could actually use their computers without all the nerds and geeks companies employ to keep them free of viruses, etc. No Geek would have to show every employee how to accomplish the even most simple tasks on his/her PC. :D

And, think of the companies who depend on selling you anti-spam, anti-virus ware, etc. Do they want to see Mac gain much more than a 10% market share? Heavens no. They'd be out-of-business. :D:P

What about the poor tech suport people in India hired to handle the countless number of calls from great PC companies such as Dell? Crap, they'd be out of a job too! No problems = No need for crazy calls half-way around the world to try and NOT get them fixed.:shock::shock:

Gheez, KEN could play more golf and not have to build his own computer to get one that works. :D

Ya know, I could sit here all day and list reasons, but I have to help my wife with a problem she is having with her PC laptop!
:X

Quite plainly, that growth (and profit) came from Apple's Ipod/music download business and not their computer business............but I'm not sure what your point is.

The stock prices based on product adversity always rebound based upon product assurance.  Additionally, while you talked about billions of "paper" loss on a temporary problems, you forgot to mention that Microsoft's 3rd quarter earnings were dissappointing because they only 16% growth in net profit primarily due to the X-Box disaster and reinvestment in technology.

Just a guess, but perhaps Microsoft's stock price has more to do with the expectations associated with an industry giant rather than true performance delivered to the market.  Still to be addressed after all of these posts is the primary issue...............if MAC is overwhelming better, as its followers claim, then why did it move, years ago, from dominant market leader to to a distant also ran follower of the PC and never regain a semblance of its former self.  Even before the Windows OS stabilized, the PC left Apple in the dust and never looked back.:D

I am not saying that Apple makes a bad product, but, obviously, in the business world, it is not considered a valuable commodity, on a risk/reward basis for most businesses (and we all know that no company would ever want to cut millions of $ in expenses by getting MAC so they could get rid of these Info Tech departments;)).  JMHO

I believe that Apple knows fully well they have lost the battle for the mass home/business computer market, and now the strategic fight between these two is for the  music distribution business.  Hopefully, Apple won't make the same mistake it did in computers and close its architecture to the rest of the world.

That said.......I know that nothing will ever make an Apple user change to a PC user.......well, except for a great paying job at  one of the 95% of the companies' using PC based technology!

Speaking of computers:

WHAT IS ELECTRICITY?

Today's scientific question is: What in the world is electricity? And where does it go after it leaves the toaster?
Here is a simple experiment that will teach you an important electrical lesson: On a cool, dry day, scuff your feet along a carpet, then reach your hand into a friend's mouth and touch one of his dental fillings. Did you notice how your friend twitched violently and cried out in pain? This teaches us that electricity can be a very powerful force, but we must never use it to hurt others *unless* we need to learn an important electrical lesson.
It also teaches us how an electrical circuit works. When you scuffed your feet, you picked up batches of "electrons", which are very small objects that carpet manufacturers weave into carpets so they will attract dirt. The electrons travel through your bloodstream and collect in your finger, where they form a spark that leaps to your friend's filling, then travels down to his feet and back into the carpet, thus completing the circuit.
Amazing electronic fact: If you scuffed your feet long enough without touching anything, you would build up so many electrons that your finger would explode! But this is nothing to worry about unless you have shag carpeting.
Although we modern persons tend to take our electric lights, radios, mixers, etc. for granted, hundreds of years ago people did not have any of these things, which is just as well because there was no place to plug them in. Then along came the first Electrical Pioneer, Benjamin Franklin, who flew a kite in a lightning storm and received a severe electrical shock. This proved that lightning was powered by the same force as carpets, but it also damaged Franklin's brain so severely that he started speaking only in incomprehensible maxims, such as "A penny saved is a penny earned." Eventually he had to be given a job running the Post Office.
After Franklin came a herd of Electrical Pioneers whose names have now become part of our electrical terminology: Myron Volt, Mary Louise Amp, James Watt, Bob Transformer, etc. These Pioneers conducted many important electrical experiments. Among them, Galvani discovered (this is the truth) that when he attached two different kinds of metal to the leg of a frog, an electrical current developed and the frog's leg kicked, even though it was no longer attached to the frog, which was dead anyway. Galvani's discovery led to enormous advances in the field of amphibian medicine. Today, skilled veterinary surgeons can take a frog that has been seriously injured or killed, implant pieces of metal in its muscles, and watch it hop back into the pond just like a normal frog, except for the fact that it now sinks like a stone.
But the greatest Electrical Pioneer of them all was Thomas Edison, who was a brilliant inventor despite the fact that he had little formal education and lived in New Jersey. Edison's first major invention in 1877 was the phonograph, which could soon be found in thousands of American homes, where it basically sat until 1923, when the phonograph record was invented. But Edison's greatest achievement came in 1879 when he invented the electric company. Edison's design was a brilliant adaptation of the simple electric circuit: The electric company sends electricity through a wire to a customer, then immediately gets the electricity back through another wire, then (this is the brilliant part) sends it right back to the customer again.
This means that an electric company can sell a customer the same batch of electricity thousands of times a day and never get caught, since very few customers take the time to examine their electricity closely to make sure they have new electrons. In fact the last year any new electricity was generated in the United States was 1937; the electric companies have been re-selling it ever since, which is why they have so much time to apply rate increases.
Today, thanks to men like Edison and Franklin, and frogs like Galvani's, we receive almost unlimited benefits from electricity. For example, in the past decade scientists developed the laser, an electronic appliance so powerful that it can vaporize a bulldozer 2,000 yards away, yet so precise that doctors can use it to perform delicate operations on the human eyeball, provided they remember to change the power setting from "Vaporize Bulldozer" to "Delicate".

Here's the link again.  The real world explanation as to why Macs are better, dollars and cents wise, than peecees.

http://www.macvspc.info/pages/01f-pc_myths_debunked.html

And, just some food for thought here Sir Ken.   Just because the vast majority of people choose one product over another doesn't mean the product is better.  It usually means that one product had a better marketing strategy than the other.   I like to compare the to companies to automobiles.  You definately get what you pay for.  And, I for one, would much rather drive a Porche than a Ford. (No slam on Ford intended, I've owned several and have no issues with Ford.)

If I remember correctly, the DOD is using the latest Mac OS.  Their reasoning?  It's more secure than any other operating system available.

Guys, good debate but we have to keep a cool head.:)

Ok I am not an american, but US Pentagon and FBI are the world's bench marks for military and police respectively. Only if ANYONE can tell me if any of them are using Mac, then I am convinced it is better than PC. Or else, even if we debate until THE COW JUMPS OVER THE MOON, there will be no ending. :)

Hence, 3T admin team, I would like to ask for this post of mine to be closed. If anyone wants to carry on, I believe he or she is welcomed to start a FRESH topic like "PC vs Mac" for e.g. :)

As Pentagon or FBI, only a blind does not know. I think the answer is quite obviously! :P:P:P:P

Hence, 3T admin team, I would like to ask for this post of mine to be closed. If anyone wants to carry on, I believe he or she is welcomed to start a FRESH topic like "PC vs Mac" for e.g. :)

Jacky,

I understand your concern, and I don't think that anyone here is getting personal or not keeping a "cool" head.  If any of the posts appear that way (and I don't think they do), I am sure it is unintentional.  It is a good debate, and one that will actually never be resolved.  However, I for one have picked up some good info on MAC because of it.

I read the article, however, there are several flaws in it, the main one being..........who is this guy and what are his credentials???  As far as I know, it could have been written by Steve Jobs.

That said, my debate is not whether or not MAC is technologically better than PC.....it is what is better in the world of business, especially from an educational standpoint for those entering and having to compete in that world.  The truth is that PC and the Windows operating system so dominates that universe that it is, in fact, the de facto standard around which, the world revolve.  Yes, there are niche area of MAC and PCs with LINUX and there are UNIX based machines, but never has an OS been able to successfully usurp Microsoft, not even the full power of IBM,in Microsoft's infancy, could redirect users to something else.

Bottom line, to compete in today's world, as it currently exists and has for a decade or more, as a rule, one must learn to live with PC/Windows.........and that makes it better.  Whether or not it is superior is an academic debate as was BETA vs VHS.

You make a good point Ken.  I have no idea who the guy who wrote that article is working for.  I think alot of the facts that he cites are probably verifiable.  If you look at alot of "reputable" publications, I think you'll find that most of them are saying that the debate is over. The Mac is the better machine and will continue to kick Microsofts butt when it comes to operating systems. The Wall Street Journal, Business Week, and PC World are a few of the places where I've read this. I think there was a time when you could say that those entering the business world needed to know how to operate a windows OS.  But, I think what is important to know now, is that the windows operating system has been evolving (with every delayed release) to mimic the Mac OS.  With Macs now shipping with Intel chips as a standard, and the ability to run Windows natively on a Mac, the lines become very blurred.  I don't think anyone will be able to say that there is software that they need, that they can't get on a mac. Honeslty, I think that there will be a bunch of people who will try the Mac OS, realise how hassle free it is and switch.  But, to echo one of your points Ken, this is a debate that will never come to an end.  It's kind of like the diehard Chevy guy who will never, ever buy a Ford.  It's just fun to debate every once in a while.

I think you will find that when people start mounting the Windows OS on their MACs, that MAC will lose its "hassle-free" rep, because, after all, it is the OS that is attacked by hackers, virus "evil-doers" and spyware.............not the hardware.  An MS OS will be vulnerable no matter wahere it is mounted simply because of its dominance.

And, you are absolutley right that BG is mimicking the MAC OS with Windows......he didn't fall off a turnip truck.  Take a look at the new IE7....I think you'll find it looks remarkably like Firefox (without all of the plug-ins).  Fortunately or unfortunately, this is what Microsoft does best.............it dominates the sofware world whether by in-house design, take-over or pushover..............not approving or disapproving, just stating the facts.  Remeber when Word Perfect (not MS WORD) dominated the word processing world?  And Lotus, not Excel, dominated spreadsheet software.....and, of course, nobody ever heard of Access, 'cause it was all about dBase.

You may not like Billy, but he has done more than anyone to revolutionize personal and business computing (and IBM thought it was just a fad - LMAO!).
