After commenting an hour ago about Toni's "TODAY" post about the First World War ("The Great War"), I stumbled upon this USA Today story about Frank Buckles, one of only four living U.S. veterans of World War I. He's 106 now and the story and his video account are really amazing! http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-03-27-cover-ww1-vet_N.htm?csp=15 ![]()

Thank you for this. Buckles' story and the information about World War I made for a great, sobering read. I think few people really know squat about this--The Great War. Don't recall it being mentioned in school.......did all my reading about it on my own. Everything that has followed seems to have its root there. Why don't people learn from history? I did not know about General Pershing's grave, however. Frank Buckles video was short, but so nice to hear from him personally. I have too much to say, and this isn't the place for essays.....:) Thank you again for posting this. pacifichrono wrote: After commenting an hour ago about Toni's "TODAY" post about the First World War ("The Great War"), I stumbled upon this USA Today story about Frank Buckles, one of only four living U.S. veterans of World War I. Very interesting..........especially the tie-in to today's conflicts. I do remember learning about the Great War in school (and yes, it was post-1945)!

I love reading and or hearing about these folks. ;) I'm 3ed generation US Navy. Veteran now but hearing about the fella and gals who served in WW1 and WW2 is just amazing to me. A very different life time. My older brothers boy just might be generation 4 next Summer? :)
