I have two 40mm samples here from Jeff the Watchdude. One has a flat sapphire, the other has the high domed acrylic. I am much more drawn to the domed acrylic, it is mesmerizing to look at. It is very clear and clean and doesn't show fingerprints as easily as sapphire. If it gets scratched it can be easily polished with polywatch.

Here are some photos of the samples:

Im really liking these. I love it in a 42mm case. I love the domed crystal. Have you considered a no crown guard version?

I just ordered a military black leather Bund strap for this domed sample. I use to have a Bund a few years ago and it was very comfortable, but all my watches were a bit large to wear with it. I think this 40mm will be a good size on the Bund pad.

Steve, any chance you'd consider a limited run in 44mm, at least?

I too like the 40 for such a classic even though I usually wear larger watches. I may just get one of the 40mm for now :)

quote from me, above... "The vintage series that Ralf and I will produce will be bumped up to 42mm"

I have been wearing the 40mm all day on my Marathon Gsar rubber strap. It is comfortable, but I think 42mm will be a great size and not too big, but just a bit larger than this one and still classic... my wife even commented at dinner tonight... "that watch you have on looks like a ladies watch" maybe she was just hinting that I should give it to her.

I'm thinking about using gold sword hands, These old military watches below used the sword hands, I think for the old MoD specs (Ministry of Defense). I haven't seen any versions out there with gold sword hands and think it would look great.

+1, even though I hear you regarding "bumping up to 42mm ..." 44mm is probably the smallest I would buy personally (and understand the point of being true to the original specs)

Also love the gold sword hands part ...looks great.

Keep up the good work, and expect great things to come:0)

this one will be 42mm, the raven watches might get up to 44mm for a future model, but I think for a true military style it should not be so big. The Navy SEALS helped JLC design a military watch and they told them to bring it down to 42mm.

Thanks Steve. But I think there will be quite a number on 3T that can go and will go 44mm. Anyway, in case you have a change of heart on the variant size, I'll jump in thumbsup.gifthumbsup.gifthumbsup.gif

I'd personally prefer the Mercedes hands an 42 is bigger than the original 40mm without being too big, a size most can feel comfortable with IMHO. I'm Definitely interested:)

I agree on 42mm but I like the sword hands over the Mercedes. To me, for this type of watch simple and purposeful rather than ornate is the way to go.

the gilt dial and hands are representative of the Rolex 6200...if this were to be a correct homage, only in 42mm(which I like),instead of 40mm,then the crown guards would have to go,and a big crown in it's place....below is a link to the Rolex 6200...

that looks awesome...Thumbsup3.gif 42mm on the heavy bund strap makes it look much larger for the guys who would prefer a 44mm

Nice touch, with the desert boonie in the background..bravo.gif

How about a sapphire bezel insert, that would be killermy love.gif

this one in the photos is just a 40mm. I don't have a sample that is 42mm yet, so yes 42mm will look good and big.

Boy, am I late to this thread or what Steve! crap.gifsubtlelaugh.gif

I love the 42mm case dimension...also love the lack of crown guard...and the recent case design and dial looks incredibly vintage too! thumbsup.gif

I guess I'm in the minority, but I happen to much prefer the sword hands you showed earlier in the thread compared to the more commonly seen mercedes style...but it's all good.

42MM IS SWEET! Mercedes hand makes it too much of a replica. I'd go with the sword. Just my opinion. Really diggin' it though and may snatch this one up. Good work Steve.bravo.gif

It's a late comment but I think that 42mm is right for this watch.

A lot of people complain about the fad for massive watches but, like it or not, 39/40mm is a bit small today for watches like this.

Just came across this, very nice! I like the 42mm size, no crown guard. I'd probably prefer the sword hands, but the Mercedes is fine too. Only thing that could make it even better for me would be a no-date version, I'd be all over that.

Let me share a little inside info about my experience with a non date version. We had a few produced with the Remora 1 (myiota 9015) and the 1st bronze Moray (ETA 2824). When I handled the non-date versions I did not like how it felt. The factory removed the gear and date wheel for whatever reason on those watches and it did not feel right when you pulled the crown out in the 1st position, and then going into time setting position also felt strange. I had to send 1 of the bronze moray "Top Grade 2824" back to the factory because the crown wouldn't sit in the time setting position.

Ralf and I discussed the idea of producing some non date versions of this watch, I said we need to leave the date gear and the date wheel in place and just use a dial with no date window, but for whatever reason the factory will not produce them this way, I am not a technical expert on why they need to remove it, but in the end Ralf and I decided that the date is in a well designed place that looks like the 3:00 hour mark and I do not want half the watches to have technical problems due to modifying the movements.

Understood. You had actually mentioned this to me about the Moray as well. I don't understand the reasoning behind having to remove the date wheel, but if it doesn't work it doesn't work. I should have known you already considered it.

I wear non date hand winds often and I don't mind either way (date or no date), but when I check into the rock climbing gym I have to sign my name and date it and I always look at my watch for the date and half the time I am looking at a watch with no date, haha.

I know what you mean. No date has always been my preference, simply for aesthetic reasons, but more and more my watches have the date, and it has become natural to check for the date. I do find myself checking the date on my no-date models.-)

you must have seen an old 40mm made by Jeff the Watchdude. We took over in July of 2011 and our 100 watches will be ready in 4-5 months.

Just been catching up with this date/no date discussion... I had a "mil-sub" made for me a while ago with some random Asian parts and some Ranger Tudor hands. The dial was a no-date and the best alternative was the 2801-2 eta who is a manual version who inspired the 2824-2...
The 2801-1 is a very simple and strong 17 jewels movement: I would recommand it for those wanting a non-dated version as it has the exact same diameter as the 2824-2 and will fit any case/hands builded for this movement.

Put me down for this 42mm vintage with 2824-2. I hope the attention to detail will also be equal on the oyster bracelet, ie solid end links, half links, divers extension, and scissor deployment clasp.

Steve...When are the pics going up on 3t or raven site? You've been teasing for like a week with that darkened background shot and text "pictures coming soon." Anyway put me down on the list for one of the first 100, after much research I've decided to go with the Vintage for my collections sub homage (mainly from your stellar rep with Benarus and attention to detail with Ralf).  Looking forward to the picsThumbsUp02.gif

I was going to get just the head piece, now I am waiting to get the whole watch with finished bracelet.... soon. I will probably have the watch in hand in the next few weeks.
