Speaking of not honoring their word............I always thought that Circuit City was a "stand-up" outfit until I just found out they were into fraudulent "bait & switch" advertising. I got their email flyer about their great "Back-to-School" notebok computer deal with rebates and free "goodies" package including printer, WIFI router, etc. I went to the local store to buy one and was told they had upgraded them by putting $20 worth of worthless software on them like Norton Security and some other crap just as useless and had booted the price by about $150 for "parts & labor". coyote2.gif

I thought "no sweat", I'll just order it off of their site. Come to find out, they have no central shipping warehouse for their web sales....evrything is shipped out of their local store inventory according to your ZIP.....so it was "not available".

I called customer service and they agreed that it was bait & switch and then called the store to check on it. Come to find out, according to Circuit City CS, that the Circuit City Regional VP (a Jason Fox at 303-657-5928 - Oscar, delete if inappropriate) ordered all of his stores to do this to 70% of the notebooks on sale!

To me, it is a classic case of "bait & switch"............oh hell....it's just out-and-out FRAUD.

Guess CC Corporate and then the State Attorney Generals Office gets a warm and friendly phone call from me on Monday!yossam1.gif

I had always thought of Circuit City as a reputable company........do you think they've been bought out by Invicta?

I'm surprised that "any" CS rep would admit to B&S on behalf of their company. I hope you got a name.

And, it is bait and switch. Assuming you weren't offered the unit as advertised, you have a case. I was in the retail electronics field for many years and have dealt with some of the retail crap that goes on. But, I am (like you) surprised that a local "VP" (Vice Pri*k) would over-ride a company special. Most likely these units came with the added software. I doubt there is a guy in back sitting there adding software onto 70 laptops and re-boxing them. That's a load of crap.

If I really wanted the unit, I'd squawk just like you did.Firegun.gif

If you had said BEST BUY, I wouldn't have been that surprised.

Hope you keep us posted.

Sounds like a 'victa story, 'cept cannot believe he admitted to it!

Called the Corporate headquarters in Virgina this morning at 8:00am MST.  Told them the proble..........mentioned "bait & switch" to them....read the Arizona Consumer Fraud Act to them (A.R.S 44-1521 through 44-1534).  At 11:00am MST I got a call from the local store manager apologizing for the "misunderstanding" and the poor service I had received and, of course, "What time would you like to come in so that I can personally insure that you get the product as advertised, sir?"

I think the Regional VP got his ass kicked about 10:00am MST! coyote2.gif

Good for you. I'm glad you followed thru and got a resolution to the whole deal. I'm gonna guess that the local VP needed to improve his margin numbers that he might be getting paid on (i.e. bonus). It happens.

Picked it up yesterdea (did not know much about the Acer brand), solid machine with:

1) Intel Pentium M735A (Pentium 4) @ 1.7Ghz with 2MB L2 Cache

2) 15.4 WXGA Britescreen LCD

3) 512MB DDR2 SDRAM (will take another 512MB)

4) 60GB HD

5) built in WIFI

6) LAN 10/100

7) DVD/CDRW

8) Windows XP Home

ALL this for $449.00, and........................I got a FREE Lexmark 3-in-1 Printer, D-Link Wireless Router and Etrst Security Software Suite.

Paid and extra $199.00 for a 4-Year Total Warranty..........don't usually get after-market warranties, but notebooks are so damn fragile.  My hp warranty has paid for itself 3 times over!

Acer has been around for quite a while. They are an off-shore outfit that has hung in the "third tier" of computer makers until recently. Their gear is ok, but CS at Acer usually ranks near the bottom. I helped a friend with an Acer laptop and was on the phone for quite awhile with tech support. The techs support guy was not too friendly, but not the worst I have dealt with. We wound up sending the laptop back and they replaced a dead CPU fan. All is well now. It is a knockout laptop. One of the Ferrari models. Very cool.

Fortunately, I bought the Circuit City Extended Warranty which has implicit guarantees!!!

I have a friend who bought one of those warranties. Her laptop keyboard went bad after a year and it would have cost around $400 to replace with labor, etc. That more than covered the cost of the warranty she bought and then some.

acer is very popular in oz.  now for the waranty make sure you read it .  if it is like staples it only covers one repair in the 4 yr period of time.  once the repair is made the waranty is over.  so check it out.  not saying that is what they are doing but some do it.  i know i found out.  never buy an extended waranty at staples.  total waste of money.  i made out ok since i called the attorney general and actually got a brand new laser printer.  which i then registered on line for the free one year waranty from the manu.
