It's gonna be my Dad's B-day soon. He will be 65. He only has one watch. His fathers, that he wears occasionally. He really is not a jewelery type of guy. But my mom insist that I get him a watch for his B-day. It needs to be something that can take a beating doing some yard work, and has to have a leather band. I was originally thinking a traser. Can anyone suggest some other types for me.?Thanks Dave.

A few quick questions to narrow down his tastes.

Does he like big or small watches?
Is he conservative or flamboyant in his dress?
Is he practical or outside the box in his thinking?

Example, my father is mechanical engineer who is extremely conservative in his dress, and overly practical in everything. He could easily afford any watch under 20k but he loves his $120 37mm Eco-Drive with semi fancy navy blue dial. He can't understand why I wear these big honking 41MM watches with antique power sources that make them so thick.

I think something like your Alba with either a ceramic bezel or evan full ceramic and with a long life quartz battery.

He is very conservative, and practical. He does not like big watches like us. I was going to get him a movado but mom say's to get him an all around work watch. I'm also thinking #'s on the face since his eye-sight is not as good as it use to be. Thanks for the help guys.

Look down this Forum's left line and check-out the 3T Forum Friends... between Orsa, Boschett, Dievas, Benarus, and Bebaufre, it would be hard not to find the perfect timepiece, (style and price point), for good ole Dad!

I am not trying to beat a dead horse or any thing but the dfreemont is about as good a watch that I have found that is also very conservative.  It is priced at $295 on a strap or $375 on a bracelet.  They also have payment plans.

How about a Hamilton Khaki Automatic. It's a name brand you father is sure to recognize and appreciate, it has a long history of rugged service, and big easy to read numbers on the dial. They look great on leather, ZULU, NATO, rubber, or bracelet and come in many flavors and more conservative sizes.

Not sure what kind of budget you're targetting, but a Bathys 100 Fathom or Aquaculture are sub 42mm dials with BIG numbers and should be tough enough.  I've been thinking about picking one of my dad for the same reason -- can't see the dial on his current watch without holding his arm far away...poor guy is running out of arm. :P

Dan....I can't believe I am saying this, but I would recommend a quartz watch.  If he is the kind of guy that takes his watch off a lot, then (I would think) he doesn't want to go "hassle" of winding and resetting....Shady's recommendation of the ORSA quartz Military, with a nice after market leather band, is an excellent suggestion.  Seiko and Orient also make a plethora of trouble free models.
