Well Chick Hazzard...a great comparison question! I don't own either, but know there are fellow 3T'ers that own them, so I'm hoping they chime in with there opinion. Both Mkii and Steinhart have fantastic reputations for building very high quality pieces and these two are great competitors from a design, size, and features standpoint. With a quick read of the specs, I see a very few differences, but the MKii is going to give you an Elabore grade version of the ETA 2893-2 (I don't know what grade ETA 2893-2 Steinhart is using, but I'm sure Gunter at Steinhart would provide this information if you asked...and maybe someone here at 3T knows). The Mkii is also giving you an HRV (but I'm scratching my head because at 300m WR rating for both pieces, the HRV seems completely unecessary).  The only other difference I see is that the Mkii is using superluminova C1 while the Steinhart is using superluminova C3 (The C1 will appear bright white in daylight with a more blueish glow with lume on, the C3 will appear off-white...more vintage with a strong green glow with lume on...the C3 will have a brighter glow if Lume brightness matters to you. At the prices you posted, I also noticed that the MKii is coming on a rubber strap while the Steinhart is coming on a ss bracelet. Certainly, if you are a bracelet versus strap guy, that may play into your decision. I have owned Steinhart pieces, and my impression is that they offer an amazing value for the dollar. The more expensive Mkii is well known for making extremely high quality timepieces, but if you've been at this awhile you know that the quality and value are not necessarily directly tied to the price of entry. So, the question you are asking...Is the MKii worth over twice the price of the Steinhart?...again, I don't own either, but I would say NO.

I've handled both at a gtg and own a LRRP MilSUb, I'll tell you that IMO the MKII's dial is sharper, the printing crisper,the dial is also darker, not sure if the Steinhart I handled had inner A/R the MKII did, the brushing finish is finer on the MKII, also the bracelet on my LRRP seems heavier duty than the Stein. The MKII comes off as a more refined overall piece. Also, if memory serves the MKII bezel rotates allowing you to keep track of 3 time zones not just two as the Steinhart with it's fixed bezel. It all coes down to what you want to spend, IMO the MKII is the better more refined overall watch.

if the MKII had an inner 24hr dial as well as the 24hr rotating bezel you could easily time 3 time zones but it doesn't.... ...I just have to say that Bill makes an awesome watch and of the 2 pictured looks more refined and better built imo ... his prices lately are a bit high imo with all the competition...but his watches are built like tanks.I like his new Mil-Sub GMT which I pointed out in another thread. ...I have had the back off my MKII Stingray and it is built amazing and was half the price of the LRRP second hand and maybe you may want to scout the LRRP on a sales forum...while the last time I had a Steinhart Ocean1 it had a plastic retainer so there are certain items that would make it less expensive. ... both use the same eta 2893...the eta 289X series only has 3 grades...elabore,top and COSC. ...in the end Chick it comes down to what you feel more comfortable with as both have appealing qualities....price being the driving factor imo.

Hi Oscar, you can in fact track three time zones on the mkII. the hour hand. In the picture the gmt hand indicates 3:38, while the bezel indicates 21:38 or 9:28pm and since the bezel is not fixed you can allign it to be x amount of hours ahead or behind the hour hand

Chick I have owned both and still own the Steinhart. My feeling is the MKII is way over priced and the Steinhart is a steal! I like the outside bezel on the Steinhart better also, the MKII markers are a little too bold for me. I have not worn the same watch for more then a few days in a row in years and I really cannot see either watch wearing out even if you did wear it day in day out so IMHO I would buy the Steinhart and save the cash for the next new release   Last edited on Tue Jan 25th, 2011 05:37 pm by Devin |
