Well, this post is a bit "tongue in cheek"...;) Some people have mailed me, asking if there is any special tool to open the case back of the Seagull "1963" with it's uncommon 10 facettes.
They took me over to the watchmaker's workplace, after some digging in several drawers this tool was shown to me:
OK, all this digging around in these drawers made it perfectly clear that this tool has not been used over a really loooong time. But they had one "1963" open on the table. Let's look around what else might be of use:
What's that on the keyboard in front of the Witschi? Yup, gotcha! The standard case opener ball is the tool of choice at Seagull. So nothing special to open the case of the watch, either one uses the ball (available at Ofrei or jewellerssupplies) or any of these: the V-Shape Case Opener (CWR-580.00), V-Tech Case Opener (167.705) at Ofrei, the Case Opener V-Shape (590.018) at jewelerssupplies. Though I might be able to source a Chinese tool like the one above - it will most likely not be worth the shipping cost.

Markus, what is a "standard case opening ball" and how is it used on the 1963? I've never seen anything like that before.

OK, here you go: This thing is roughly about the size of a Tennis ball and made from soft friction plastic/rubber. You just have the watch either in the palm of one hand (or in a case holder) and press the ball against the case back with the other hand, start turning - and off it comes. Opens just about every screw back, including Rolex, Seagull or other "special backs". Absolutely no scratches. Only if the backs were screwed in with high torque one really needs a wrench. This thing is really cool. I must admit, I forgot about them until I saw the one on that keyboard. I will get me one for sure. The ball was featured on TZ some time ago (maybe 1.5 or 2 years?), but the search function on TZ is crap, so I can not find the post again. It is also on the bottom of this page at ofrei.com http://www.ofrei.com/page557.html And here on jewelerssupplies.com: http://www.jewelerssupplies.com/case-openers.html Cheers, Markus Last edited on Sun Jun 3rd, 2007 09:07 pm by cnmark |

I ordered 2 from ofrei after seeing this thread and they work pretty well. I'm getting rid of the cheap caseback opener I got on ebay. No more worries of scratching the casebackhand6.gif.
