Ok guys. Well i'm having some difficulty on deciding either to get an Oris Diver or the Marathon J-SAR. So i'm looking for some help and guidance. For the price of the J-SAR i can get the watch for $425 and the stainless steel band for $125 which i think is a great deal. The problem I'm having though is you can also get an Oris for the same price. Meaning by the time you calculate getting everything for the J-SAR just under $700. Hmmmm, I thought that I was convinced on the J-sar but looks like not yet. Any thoughts or suggestions???? Thank you.

I would be learning towards the J Sar myself with the bracelet

The J Sar looks more tough
The Oris looks more classy

The J Sar looks Bigger than the Oris

Just buy them both and call it even woohoo.gif

The budget calls for only one watch right now. Both would be nice but not at this time. Usually I like to get a watch every 6 months in reason.

I've looked at the Marathon watches several times and always seem to go another direction. They they do look very cool. I have a Oris TT1 300M and I love it. ;)

I vote for the Oris depending on the movement it has.

quartz or automatic, and case size. I like them both. a oris tt1 can be had in ss or ti, on bracelet and get the divers kit for under a grand. black, blue or full lume dial. so far I have seen the eta 2824 in the full lume version and the sw200 in the black and blue versions. the jsar is huge. from what I've seen from other forums, people are pretty happy with it on the bracelet.

The JSAR is definitely "hotter" at the moment. An Oris can be had on the secondary market cheaper though. Tough call.

Yeah, which Oris diver are you talking about? They make a lot of different models. The JSAR is really nice (for quartz) but to make a recommendation we need to know which Oris diver you are interested in.

I've owned an Oris TT1 and a Marathon GSAR.  Both are very cool watches.  The Oris was much nicer, in my opinion.  It just had a higher level fit and finish and just felt like a more upscale watch.  However, if what you're going for is the "ultimate tool watch" it's hard to beat the Marathon.  It is a solid watch with a monster bezel and the bracelet is quite nice. It does kind of bug me that while all other hands and dial markers are tritium tubes, the second hand is Superluminova and gets lost in the dark after a while.

The only downside to Oris, IMHO, is that they don't hold their value that well.  I took a pretty good loss on both Oris' I sold.  However, that works out in your favor if you're buying used! ;)

Well so far I thank everyones opinion. This was the watch I was thinking from Oris:

Oris-TT1-Mens-Watch

Stainless steel case and bracelet. Blue dial. Date displays at 6 o'clock position. Unidirectional rotating bezel. Scratch resistant sapphire crystal. Case diameter 44mm. Automatic movement. Water resistant at 300 meters (1000 feet).

I respect that. Quartz is not bad. If I can find a great deal on an Oris tt1 blue face I would then consider or if someone is selling one not to used.

I've seen it last week and really did like it. For the watch and being a quartz and just being a solid watch and knowing it can take a beating i think i will just get it. That's the fun of owning watches you buy them and enjoy them.

Agree 100% - I have both watches - a 44mm Oris Titan 1000m and JSAR and the Oris is a better watch by far.  If the JSAR were automatic, all bets would be off though.

I've never had an Oris.  I do have a TSAR and it's one of my favorite watches.  It's quartz/tritium.

Not to complicate the issue, but you might look at the Boschett Reef Ranger, an automatic.  It seems like a great watch and you'll have money left over.

2 pieces have been done as far as I have seen. Jack at IWW did the first, the second was done by Duarte at NEWW.

I would like to see a pic of this mod as the dial feet and hands will not fit a eta 2824......they were made specifically for the quartz movement and there is a difference in thickness between the 2 movements from what I know and all this would also have to be changed and or modified....$150.? for a eta 2824-2 and all this labor?....someone needs to show me this....:D

I don't know about cost and movement price, but I know this has been done. A couple of guys over at MWR have had their's done. One by Jack @ IWW and one by Duarte @ NEWW.

I know this was directed at Gray, but Oscar, I believe there are some pics over at MWR, but I haven't looked yet. Also, I believe some numbers were thrown around over there the last time I saw a post about it.

Howard at westcoastime and MWR has the SAR with auto eta and at 46mm for $585.-$535.(bracelet extra)....so why go through all this trouble to install a eta into the J-Sar....isn't the J-Sar also 46mm....is it the dial that everyone likes on the J-Sar and aren't the cases the same except for height face4.gif

That might be a misprint. I thought the SAR, GSAR and TSAR were all the same case size. The only difference being the lume, hands and movement. I just double checked over at MWR and their site says 46mm on case size for all 3 of those, so I'm not sure how they're doing their measurements. My GSAR can't be bigger than 42mm excluding lugs:?. It's roughly the same size as my SMP, just taller and chunkier. I'll check over at CountyComm too.

The Sar has a Case of 46 and a Bezel of 41mm

The J sar has a case and bezel of 46mm

I never understood how that worked????

CountyComm lists the case size as 46mm also and the JSAR as 46.6mm, but when you look at the side by side comparison picture, there's a HUGE difference. Still not sure how they're measuring their cases though.

TY....I can see how the j-SAR would be more desirable with the larger bezel and viewing area.....I wonder what the modders are using for a retainer ring......I would do this mod myself if all it took was a swapping of movementshand6.gif I searched the MWR but no pics ...I would like to see what hands are being used...

I found one pic of the one Jack did and it has a different set of hands. The search I ran was 'automatic JSAR'. I didn't find any mention of price either, so I may have been mistaken or saw it somewhere else.

There has to be a misprint on all these sites as far as case size being 46mm for this auto SAR.....if you read the description it says bezel diameter 41.10 mm and when you look at the watch the bezel is the same size of the case minus the crown guards....I'm thinking 46mm is lug to lug face4.gif

You're right O, it's surely not 46mm wide for the normal GSAR/TSAR.  I've had a GSAR and it wasn't nearly as big as I expected.

And seeing a GSAR compared to the JSAR, they definately use different sized cases/bezels (the JSAR looks huge).

I can see the desire for the JSAR size, if someone likes big watches.

On my wrist, I thought the GSAR wore quite a bit smaller than it's measurements suggested, even on the fantastic bracelet.

Exactly, this has been my confusion over and over, no matter how many times I have read that description in the past, I could never figure it out, I thought I was a retard, there has to be a mis print in there.

Lets do this Mod!

From what I've read around here...you'd really like this wouldn't you Hucky? ;)

For the price though...man it seems sweet.  I'd be tempted to get the dial/hands relumed and painted, as well as a bunch of other mods too....oh man...please don't do this mod cheaply...I'll be broke :D.

if I knew what ISA quartz was used in the J-SAR it would shed a better light for me as far as how the mod is done....if all it takes is a simple swap of movements and a change of the hour/minute hand I can do it.....from the looks the J-SAR second hand can be usedhand6.gif I don't own a J-SAR so I can't determine what the size of the movement is inside and if the retaining ring and dial feet will match up ...what has thrown me is the qoute of $150. including the eta 2824-2 as I have not seen any movements selling for less than $145.:?

As RJ Johnson once said:

You can call me Ray, and you can call me Jay.  You can call me Ray Jay or you can call me RJ, but you doesn't has to call me Mr. Johnson!

To paraphrase:

You can call me RGray or you can call me Rick, but you doesn't......awww, screw it...HEY PUTZ!

Damn, I just hate it when we bring out a guy's inner-feminine self!  Now I'm all teary-eyed and everything!

Damnit! You beat me to it Pax:D. Hey Rick, if you're still lurking around, I just want to say that there was no disrespect meant by the shortening of your handle. I also know it's really hard to convey 'tone' on a computer screen, but you did come across as a tad sensitive. We all pick on each other here, because we are a tight knit group as far as forums go i.e. we're like a family. If you want to call us a clique, that's fine because I don't think anyone here will be offended.

The fit and finnish of the Oris is supurb, and the watch looks damm nice and is well built. The JSAR is a great kickaround work watch that is a good deal too. It is quartz and is not as elegant.   But you have to ask yourself one important question, "which watch would James Bond be wearing"........toon1.gif
