I was just wondering if I was the only one who doesnt have someone to share the watch hobby with in person?  If I get a new watch, nobody around here cares or notices what I am wearing. I cant even talk to anyone about watches.  One time I did have someone call me a "watch snob"??  I dont even have anything real expensive.  If it werent for all of you fine people my watch collecting would be pretty lonely.... and boring.

I have my kid brother who I kind of hooked about 4 years ago. He has most all my old quartz Invicta's and some Croton's I gave him. His girl friend buys him a watch now and then too. We talk now and then and I love to watch him drool when he comes up to visit.

I'd ask him to come here but he is not interested in the web what so ever. He is either working, with his girl, watching sports of some kind or sleeping. LOL :D

I also have my watch guy I see now and then. He has a watch repair shop in the local Mall now. But that is it. :)

I'm lucky, my boss is also watch guy. People always ask me at work what I have purchased or what I'm wearing. It has gotten to the point now, where people come around and show me what they have purchased.

Hey scottran

How did you go with the new puppy?

Yep - like most of us - this site is filled with enablers - some have watches we would like to own, others have models we have never seen before - it is great here.

I have no-one here in Western Australia that I speak to about watches, models, pricing, straps, what's available, what is happening in the world. Guess it is too much to expect that others share what is effectively an interesting but little-known passtime. WISs are as rare as rocking horse poo here in Western Australia. The 3T community here is my default discussion group and I couldn't be happier. If you are asking about watch buddies - then yes, jon12w in Sydney (3000klms away) is a great mate, as is JHM here on the site, but he is in Germany and it is a little hard to walk to his front door! Probably better that we don't all have neighbours that we can speak to - it would make buying and selling WAY too easy, and WAY too frequent! subtlelaugh.gif

I say it doesn't matter - being here is half the fun!!

Cheers - and let us know about that potential puppy you mentioned earlier!

I've always got Canadajo though he hasn't been showing up here too very much. Like Chick I have some colleagues at work who will pull me aside and show me their latest though that's a little dicey because they are making M.D. money and have some real beauts... Some are true WIS, some are well off guys who wanted a nice watch...

Same here, if it weren't for this forum, I would be alone in my hobby as well. I started at 15 years old and back then... before Al Gore invented the internet,  it was just me and my Omegas and Heuers that I would save up for months to buy. I had a friend who was an authorized dealer and would get them for 50% off.  I have always loved watches but prior to the internet it was a private hobby of mine. boy10.gif

I feel like Will Smith in "I am Legend."

No one else in my personal or professional life cares at all about watches.  I dare not speak of watches out loud lest my wife and kids discover the true extent of my geekdome.

I need to get into a 12-step program... or maybe upgrade my friends and family.

For the most part, my friends and family just shake their heads and smile. My wife has been pretty tolerant about what she calls my 'fiscal irresponsibility', but now that the baby is imminent I have to be more concerned about finances. On a brighter note, many of my friends and collegues come to me for watch advice:).

You're not alone.  Since my interest in watches was kindled by an internet frient six months ago, I've not had a conversation with anyone about my watches.  However, one person did notice my Black Monster and comment on it.

My 34 year old son, with whom I have a great relationship, doesn't even wear a watch and he's so frugal I dare not show him any of my watches lest he realize what a lunatic his father is.

Well, I have a coworker that I can talk watches with but he's more controlled than I am.  I brought a watch in to a shop at Sears one day and the watchmaker saw me getting more excited as I talked about watches that he passed me a phone number-no it wasn't a 12 step program that some of us should be in but it was the number to the Secretary of the local NAWCCA chapter. Right in my own city!  Well I joined up and we meet regularly to appreciate horology and talk about what we enjoy.  I recommend everyone  try and find their local chapter if there's one nearby.

Glad to know I am not the only one.  You know whats funny?  We get over 300 antique tractors at our show.  Its much harder to collect tractors than watches.    You need a truck, trailer, and a place to store.  I know  hundreds of people who collect tractors, but when it comes to watches, none... in person.  I just wonder how many "closet WIS's"  there are out there that we dont know about?

Tonight we had a T-Ball game and I noticed the one of the opposing coaches had a Rolex Seadweller on. I kind of assumed he was a WIS but turned out he was just a guy with a few bucks who recognized a Rolex was the way to go.  During the handshakes post game I complimented his Sea Dweller. He hadn't heard of my watch... a Tutima DI300, which I think most WIS with a penchant for divers might recognize...being that its freaking TITANIUM AND ORANGE!!

Yeah, PAX...where has that Packer's lovin' SOB been lately....?

Although many comment on my watches and many ask advice, I've only got one friend who is really into it.  While he has many high end pieces (several Rolex, Panny, Hublot, etc), I have turned him onto the joys of the lower and mid-range watches.  He has the Blue Monstrum, my ORSA Lume, I sold him a Gevril and he talked me out of my Stowa Pink Panther...oh, and his wife called for birthday and Christmas suggestion and she got him a Tissot PRS 516 Auto and an ENZO Orange dial EMV001!
