I'm wondering why there is nearly always a "tail" on the second hand; but rarely do the hour & minute hands extend past the point where they're attached. Is there a reason for this beyond aesthetics? |

It helps balance out the weight of the longer hand (see them a lot on divers, esp., where there is additional weight of lume on the outer part of the seconds hand). |

Devil in the details..............I never even noticed that detail of the second hand until Natevan70 raised it. Thanks to Natevan for raising it, and big thanks to Chris for the quick answer. One question that I have and I guess this is directed to Chris/Ralf/Steve/Kazim/Anders and the other watchmakers and brand custodians is this: With all the past work on dials, bezels, crowns, buckles, straps, hands, number indeces etc.....why has there been so little work done on buckles and buckle designs? We have the the usual thumbnail, PreV etc etc but beyond that hardly have I seen a buckle that complements the theme of the dial or a bezel. Sorry of I missed something..... Thanks- That makes sense. My Seiko 007, and I think one model diver from Citizen even have the lume on the tail end of the second hand. |
