A couple of years ago in a weak moment I purchased 2 Lupahs, a dragon and grand. I confess i still like their heft and it was reassuring to know I had something in that watch case that told the right time as I'm prone to allowing watches to run down. Well to my surprise both are dead, i assume because of batteries. What is the life expectancy of batteries in general, are there higher quality batteries that would give a longer life?

On average, a standard watch battery will last 2 years. Some newer lithium batteries can last up to 10 years. Of course, your "mileage" may vary depending on conditions and use. With a chrono such as your Lupah, you may only get 1 year out of battery if you use the chrono funcitons frequently. The good news is that it is quite easy to change the battery. A Battery for the Lupah should cost between $3 and $4 if you install it yourself. Plan on around $8 at a Jeweler. You'll need a small screwdriver to get the back off your Lupahs.

Many watchmakers are now offering ltium batteries (at an average charge of $15 installed) with a lifetime replacement warranty!

There are different quality's of batteries like any thing else and some sit around and run down a % every month. There is always the manufacturing flaw that causes it to short out and die, but to tell you the truth buy an Energizer for around $2 or so and change it out. The watch movement has a holder of a specific size that is the numbers on a bat. same as the larger AA's and D's. Standard alkaline and lithium are diff voltages for the same amount of anode and cathode material so they are diff sizes so you can not mix them up and put them in a movement that they are not designed for. As sure as I say this there will be some sizes that can interchange, but not as a rule.

You need a 394X for the Lupah's, I would listen to Ken and Mike because I have never bought a battery retail.

One of the batteries in my Lupah divers died not to long ago, Renata 394 inside. Cannot find a 394 anywhere in real life, but ebay has them for about $3+ shipped. Last edited on Mon Oct 23rd, 2006 12:13 am by monster623az |

FWIW, I found a battery for a Lupah back in June at my Local Walmart. Jewelry dept. is where they had it. Not in electronics. You have to ask for a battery. I also have found batteries at Target and Radio Shack.

Cool, didnt think to ask the Walmart Jewlery dept. Did go to the Electronics tho. I have checked at Radio Shack and Walgreens, they had tons of batteries for watches and small electronics but not the one I was looking for, so I gave up thinking those 2 were most likely to have them.

Yes, the trick is to go to the Jewelry counter and ask for a 394 watch battery. Both Target and Walmart stock watch batteries. The keep them in a drawer under the counter usually. So, you have to stand there and wait for someone to help you. :)

Sometimes you can have batteries replaced at the pawn shop.Just try to resist another watch while there.
